Comic Story

Creative story writing, involving real English speech
Ideal for late 1st or early 2nd year, to refresh who, what, when, where.

Time:
Entire class, and possibly worth a second if students really show an interest!

Materials:
B4 size blank comic strips, one for each pair students.
1 large copy of the demonstration comic story, featuring Kimutaku (poster size if possible).
4 boxes or large envelopes, labelled "who, what, where, when".
Lots of sheets of small scrap paper (2 for each student).

If you're really lucky, you might get comics as pretty as this!

Procedure:
Hand out the sheets of scrap paper, and ask students to write down a who, what, when or where on the paper. If each student writes two of these (write up on the blackboard which row needs to write which category), then when they pair up later it will work out as 4 per group. For example, the who paper could have the name of a movie or TV star, cartoon character, sportsman, teacher, etc. Once they've thought of an original one, students drop the papers in the relevant envelopes.

Show the example of making a comic story, using scraps of paper labelled Kimutaku, eating ice cream, Christmas and toilet. Whatever story is made must contain those four elements. In addition, each of the six boxes on the worksheet must contain some English, in the form of captions, speech bubbles, or whatever.

Students pair up, come grab a paper from each of the envelopes, and get to work. Cross your fingers...

If you're lucky, you'll end up with a stack of full-colour stories such as this example (made by students at Hayatomo JHS).
