Wanted!!
by David Millward

Communication and descriptive vocabulary
Recommended for 2nd year and up.

Materials:
12 large sheets of white card.
As many sets of coloured marker pens as available.
1 print of the villain's photofit (optional).

Time:
Usually, a whole class. You could speed up the process by explaining the scenario in Japanese, but where's the fun in that?

Wanted!! - photofit sketching

Procedure:
Move the JTE's desk towards the door. JTE stands behind it. ALT writes 'Police Station' on the board. ALT explains that the classroom is a police station, and the JTE is a police officer [Siren noises are helpful]. ALT leaves the room.
ALT [enters]:
Good morning.
JTE:
Good morning. Can I help you?
ALT:
Yes, a man stole my bag!!
JTE: Don't worry. We have very good police artists here. Do you remember
        what he looks like?

The students make 6 groups, and are given colour pens (they also need a pencil) and big paper. Drill the students on 3 questions:
What colour was ………..?
What kind of ………?
How about his ……….?

Acting again - the JTE starts by asking the questions, but the students should ask subsequent questions. JTE should direct the questions.

JTE:

What did he look like?

Do you remember his face?
STUDENTS ASK FROM NOW ON

Anything else?

ALT:

Very tall. Thin

Wide face.
Big eyes. Big mouth. Big teeth.
Long blonde hair.
Long coat. Green.
Purple necktie. Smiling yellow face on it.
No trousers. Red swimming costume. Stockings. Net.
No shoes. Toilet slippers. Pink.
Right hand holding a soccer ball.
Left hand holding a yellow flower.
Very tall blue hat. Pink ribbon on it.
Black cat on the hat.

Hints:
Make the acting at the start very over the top and obvious!!!!
Have some fun with your description.

If time allows:
After the students have finished drawing, try having an identity parade if time allows. Get all the boys at the front of the class in a line. Then ask the questions below until you've only got one student left. Any students who answer "no", sit down. Not useful, but very funny.

Who has slippers…… likes soccer…… has a hat…… likes flowers……. has a cat…… wears stockings?

NB: Even if the bell has already gone, one thing you must do is name one of the students as the thief!!
