Activities at Bunkyo

Here you will find some of the most important activities that the Bunkyo Gospel Centre offers. We invite you to participate in any group, or just if you want to borrow a book from our library or just to have a dinner or a cup of coffee or Japanese Tea, feel free to stop by any time.

JF

Every Sunday at 10:30am in the Bunkyo Gospel Centre many Japanese gather together for Sunday services. The Japanese fellowship is overseen by Onoyama-san. In addition to running the cafe on Thursdays and Fridays, the Japanese fellowship has a lot of activities going on. Unfortunately, a detailed list was not available at the time of publishing. It will be added shortly.

Every Sunday at 4:30pm in the Bunkyo Gospel Centre many people from different countries gather together for a time of fellowship. Many often travel more than one hour to be here for Sunday worship. Services usually consist of singing, a message, sharing, and prayer. Members represent various church backgrounds and nationalities, but are joined together in a common love for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In addition to Sunday services, the English fellowship also has weekly bible studies which meet on Wednesdays and pot luck dinners about once a month. The English fellowship also supports the English cafe both with finances and volunteers.

CF

This past summer, the Bunkyo Gospel Centre was happy to open it's doors to a local Chinese fellowship. The fellowship meets evey Sunday at 2:00pm in the Bunkyo Gospel Centre. This fellowship often invites a pastor from over 8 hours away to speak at their meetings. The Chinese Fellowship has been teaching a number of Japanese and English fellowship members, including myself, basic Chinese. At the time of publishing, we did not have any other information on week to week activities for the Chinese Fellowship. More is coming soon.

cafe

One of the unique missions of the Bunkyo Gospel Centre is the cafe. Bunkyo was remodeled two years ago and at that time, an old classroom/bookstore was converted into a rustic cafe. Inside the CafeThe vision (which is becoming reality)is to create an environment for those who would otherwise feel uncomfortable stepping inside a church. It provides an opportunity for people to talk about issues in life in a quite, relaxed atmosphere. The Japanese Fellowship operates the cafe on Thursdays and Fridays from 11:00am to 2:00pm. The English Fellowship, under the supervision of Della, operates the cafe on Sundays from 11:00am to 3:00pm and on Mondays from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. Cleaning and general maintenance responsibilities are shared between the two groups.

libraryThe Bunkyo Gospel Centre is currently the home of probably over 1000 Christian books. In addition to large private collections of the missionaries, Bunkyo has a number of books which were donated by former members and currently houses the AJET Christian Support Group (CSG) library. Most people borrow CSG books through the post, but a number of CSG members from in and around Fukui are known to borrow a book from time to time. An old storage room, which housed an occasional visitor and some very permanent boxes was transformed into a wonderful study. A wood stove was recently installed for the winter season...Oh so warm and toasty!

Much more...

Here are just a few examples of some other things which Bunkyo is involved in. There are a number of Bible studies in English and Japanese, which strive to help members grow in their faith and provide answers to those from the community who have questions about Christianity. They include Bible studies designed for English speakers, Japanese speakers, and an English Bible study designed for non-native speakers. Additionally, there are a number of English classes during the week. A number of members from the English and Japanese fellowships conduct the Saturday Childrens' meetings twice a month and a very successful childrens' party club once a month. Painting classes are conducted by Olaug, our resident Picasso. In the next few months, we hope to add a few of her paintings to the home page...stay tuned.
