Dic and other mostly related topics
Dic. Yes, the company that dubbed at least the first 65 episodes of sailor moon. Yes, I know, 82 episodes were dubbed; but I'm really not sure if Dic was the company that dubbed the last 17, I think there was someone else involved too… oh well. Anyway, I know there are a lot of people who are mad at Dic. I know there are a lot of people who will not give their anger a second thought whether they read this or not. Good for them, they're consistent (I am not so consistent but that it okay because I'm a transcendentalist.) Most every moonie knows the spiel: the big mean old nasty Dic dubbed Pretty pretty sailor moon really badly. However, as always, there is more than one side to this story.
First: keep in mind that Sailor moon was originally written to give girls is hero to look up to. Then the animation was dubbed primarily for children, and not just any children, American children. Do you dislike this fact? Tough. Do you watch sailor moon anyway? So do I. Do you wish there is something you could do to reverse all that has been dubbed wrong and fix it somehow? Well I give you two options: go back in time and fix everything, or dubb it yourself.
Second: I, like many other otaku, got my first exposure to Sailor moon (or anime of any kind really) through Sailor moon's animation (technically, the first time I had ever heard of sailor moon it was during a commercial for the action figures). If USA network hadn't been showing Sailor Moon I wouldn't be whistling "Moon revenge" right now (okay, I can't whistle, but I'm humming it).
Yes, Dic screwed up (remember, this is all just my opinions, you don't have to agree with them) but is anyone really surprised? They were given the job of dubbing an incredible and insightful-however, never perfect- japanimation show. It contained many subplots and tie-ins to the Japanese culture that went completely over Dic's head (I speak of Dic as a collective, like the borg) and yet, if you had the episodes un- dubbed right in front of you and you were watching them I doubt that you would understand all of the subplots either (one of the primary reasons you wouldn't: un-dubbed they would be in Japanese which I doubt most of you can understand fluently).
The translation might not be something to take pride in, but the voice actors are very into their parts (I love Terri Hawkes, she gives it 119%). The story is excellent in Japanese and it still has many redeeming qualities in English.
So I guess I'm defending Dic, at least a little. Does this mean I like them? No. I dislike their translations (as stated before), but I think people shouldn't criticize or insult Dic's dubbing until they have seen and heard the original. Since I own tapes from the Japanese series I feel perfectly obligated to compare, contrast, and criticize at my own free will. I'm not slamming Dic (well, not to the extreme anyway) simply because people need information before they can draw reasonable assumptions and opinions (I once heard someone say that the music, voice talent, and animation was better in Japan. They were so moronic in saying that I laugh whenever I think of that person. The animation is the same). Getting all mad doesn't do any good for anyone. I'm running out of things to say and my punctuation is running afoul again (not that I ever had it under control) so I only have two things left to say: even in the Japanese version the lips weren't in sync with the voices, and Doom tree was a mistake.
I love fanfiction, i really do; i mean who else could take the excessive world of sailor moon and manipulate it to create hours of fun and wonder? Fans, that's who. Sometimes, however, i wonder what the heck these people were thinking when they watched sailor moon. One example is when they just take the characters and make them do whatever they want, even if it takes the character out of, well, out of character. I read one once where Minako (yes, sweet little crime fighting minako) flunked a test (which really isn't somthing new for her) but it pushed her over the edge (turns out her mental health was not nearly as good as the rest of the universe thought) and she went on a rampage and killed everyone. Yeah, everyone. Her parents (sorry mom and dad!) artemis (oops!) the rest of the senshi (why on earth would she die three whole times for usagi just so she could kill her herself? that doesn't make any sense!) and then she blew up tokyo and died (yeah, i'm going to spend my entire teenage life attempting to save the world and tokyo and japan and everyone everywhere from really nast youma just so i can kill them myself. right). What is the point? I mean, why don't they just write thier own story and use the name minako instead of giving the sailor moon universe a taint? Gosh and golly baka's! Thier are some story's which are really well thought out, and then there are the others... Well, i really can't think of a way for the senshi to detroy all these yicky monsters so i'm just going to knock all of them out and bring in my own character who is a gazillion times better than the rest of these piddly soldiers put together. Yeah, i'll creat my own sailor (fill in the blank). You know what else bugs me? i have to hold down the 'b' key for like a minute before the letter comes out and i keep using all these words with 'B's in them!! Anyway, Senshi are not there just so they can be killed and brought back to life!! It make the plot so completely pointless... i mean they would be immortal so nothing could hurt them, so there would be no dangers in them fighting, so what's the point?! Why don't people just give thier storys some more planning? would it really kill you to PRETEND you had some knowledge of the sailor moon themes?! (i'm using you's here, this doesn't mean i'm speaking about your fanfiction in particular, unless of course you are one of the people whom this applies to. i'll let you figure that out on your own.) And then there is sex. I understand sex happens in real life, i'm sure that usagi and mamoru had to have had somthing of some sort beceause chibi-usa wasn't brought in y a stork. Okay, it happens, but does it have to be written about? I read fanfiction to expand on my japanese vocabulary (it actually helps a lot) and to understand other people's opinions on characters. I don't read fanfiction for henti (you know, perverted stuff). If the show and the manga can leave all that out so can the authors (and it would cut down on a lot of the really bad fanfics that have very little plot and no connection to sailor moon whatsoever other than the use of caracters names). You know what else buggs me? Do you *care* what else bugs me? Are you going to learn whether you care or not? If you keep reading you will. Crossovers. Crossovers other me. Some things were meant to be mixed (like chocolate and anything) some things wern't (like sailor moon and johnny quest). Come to think of it, crossovers would be okay if the story is kept brief and amusing; No Crossover Angst! 'oh no, jessie just died so now johnny is going to drive off a cliff except- wait- Haruka (who happens to be his mechanic) is still working on the car! and now a youma is attacking so the senshi ome to help and then johnny hit sailor moon with his car so now she's dead too! Oh look, now mamo-chan is going to drive off the cliff whith johnny! Oh NO! Haruka is STILL working on the car!' You get the idea.
I understand thatmy punctuation (and spelling) are still untame so i will leave you all to your current thoughts. I hope they don't involve naked senshi.
