Alexander Fu Sheng

1954-1983

Fu Sheng came into international fame with the movie "Chinatown Kid". This movie featured a group of Taiwanese actors who would later be known to Kung Fu Movie fanatics everywhere as the 5 Deadly Venoms. This was an American made movie and Fu Sheng decided to adopt an American name. Most of us know him as Alexander Fu Sheng.

He was one of the first graduates of on-studio training school and he became one of the biggest, and most well-loved stars ever to work at the studio.

He was known as a handsome man who possessed a boyish charm. He was both a great acrobat and martial artist who worked under both of the studios greatest directors--Chang Cheh and Liu Chia-liang.

Once he suffered an accident during filming and broke both of his legs, but he returned to the screen after he healed, and was better than ever. But the star, whose candle burned so brightly, would soon be snuffed out.

On July 7, 1983, he was returning home, from a dinner engagement at the Clearwater Bay Golf Club. He was returning to the Kowloon area in a car driven by his elder brother. The car took the bending roads to fast and crashed into a cement wall on Clearwater Bay Road. Fu Sheng was rushed to United Hospital with serious injuries, and died three hours later. He was 29.

People say he inherited the same bad luck as the late Bruce Lee. Fu Sheng bought the house that Lee owned at the time of his death. It was said this house had bad "feng shui".

He remains critically unappreciated due to the current unavailability of much of his work. Fu Sheng's old makeup cubicle at the Shaw Brothers studio features a shrine constructed to appease his ghost, which is still said to walk the backlot.
