Anthony Wong Chow San

Sexy, Crazy and Lethal

English Name: Anthony
Chinese Name Variations: Chow-San, Chou-Sang
Birthplace: Hong Kong
Date of Birth: September 2, 1961
Height: The first half of 170CM - Between 5'5" and 5'7"
Weight: Unknown (A fluctuation between 150-200)

Anthony hated studying in High School and was often truant. In an interview he said he made himself read books. He was a problem child because he was often teased in school because he was half Chinese and half English (a Gwailo*), which is an unliked species.

After leaving High School in 1982, he entered into a Radio and Television Actor School in Hong Kong. While there, he made 25 television appearances in a two year span. One of his classmates was Lau Ching-Wan.

Afterwards, he entered into the Hong Kong Artist School, which just opened that year. He took an acting course and met another soon to be famous classmate Cheng Tat-Ming.

He left there in 1988 and went back to doing television. He made his first "professional" debut in 1990, though he had his original debut in 1985 while he was still in school.

He was nominated for the Hong Kong Academy Award (The Golden Horse) for supporting actor in "Now You See Love, Now You Don't'" in 1992. He did not win, but that's OK, he was just warming up for the next year when he won the award for Best Actor for his haunting, unmatchable portrayal in "The Untold Story".

His first directorial debut was in 1995, the movie: "New Tenant". He was also the leading actor and the sound director.

Unfortunately, like some actors, he is stereotyped. He is soooo good at being bad. Anthony Wong is a GREAT villain.

Anthony is also a great musician. It can be confusing walking into a record store and seeing a CD by Anthony Wong (the actor), sitting next to a CD by Anthony Wong (the singer). Luckily if it is written in Chinese, this should present little confusion.

He released a sound track CD in 1995 (For the movie New Tenant), then he released a debut song CD (Underdog Rock). This CD is designated a category III. Explicit lyrics--Anthony!! It doesn't stop there, his next CD is also designated a category III.

Anthony is a pioneer in the Hong Kong entertainment world. He deserves praise.

Anthony was married in 1995, but he did not make it public, not formally anyway. He had a baby boy in 1996 and you can get to hear baby Wong in daddy's second CD.

Word got out that Anthony was retiring from the Hong Kong entertainment world. He was moving to England with his family.

Rumors about him were flying left and right. They said that he was suffering from a thyroid problem. They wrote in one publication "Anthony has taken ill from a suspicious sickness. His skin has become dry and rough, his nose is swollen and his eyes are sticking out". Anthony stated that "Hong Kong mass media has entertainment journalists of poor quality. I think even 99% of them are illiterate".

Anthony did, however gain 30 pounds for his last project the movie "Armageddon". His character was required to be a bit on the hefty side, but he knows it is not good for his health. But hey, If DeNiro and Travolta can do it…

Well that didn't last long. Mr. Wong is back!! Thank God!!!

* Gwailo: a derogatory Chinese term used to describe a white westerner. Literally means (ghost man).
