e.Go is an email
application with loads of features. This is a commercial product that is
still under development. However you can download an early version for
a thirty day appraisal.
Editpad
is a replacement for the Windows Notepad but with a lot of improvements.
If you use this program the author asks only that you send him a postcard.
Both these applications allow you to use any font in any
size and change the colour of the font and background to suit your own
tastes.
Netscape
Communicator
Is a complete suite of applications which includes the
Navigator web browser, web page (html) designer, email application, news
reader and other goodies.
Navigator allows the option to show web pages with customized fonts and colours but many web pages look strange when this is taken to extremes as they are not designed with this flexibility in mind.
Messenger, the email manager allows text and background
to be changed to suit any preferences.
It has a spell checker, and can read and write mail in
plain text or html. ( I am using composer to create this site)
Overall:
Netscape Communicator is a big competent suite of components
that gives you all the tools you need.
It is a bit slow to load when you start it initially
but is fine thereafter. (I'm running it on a Pentium 120 with 16 meg of
ram)
There is a bit of mucking about to be done when you first
install Communicator, setting your preferences and internet settings, and
you cannot choose which components to install, its all or nothing. The
interface can be a little odd but is very usable when you get used to it
Composer is good enough to use in place of a word processor
(but you miss out on things like page numbering and other WP features)
This is the best email application I have yet seen, the only criticism
I can think of is that while the contents of a document can be displayed
in any size/colour, the address information cannot.
There are different versions available at the Netscape
web site so you may find a that one version is more suitable than another.
File size is a big consideration when downloading anything from the web.
If you can get hold of a copy on CD you will save a lot
of time as downloading Communicator might take all day.
It is a shame that there aren't many items on this list.
