Shinji Ikari is called by his father who he hasn't seen in 3 years to Tokyo 3, and at the same time an Angel, a large super being that is invisible to conventional weapons starts to attack the city. He is picked up and driven away from the violence by Misato Katzuragi and taken to Nerv Central (the base of the U.N.'s organization called Nerv) where he is told to pilot the biomechanical Evangelion Unit 01 and destroy the angel. He refuses to pilot at first until he realizes that the other person capable of piloting the Eva, Rei, is in no condition to do so, and that the Eva is willing to protect him. The episode ends with him being launched inside the Eva to do battle with the angel. Episode 2: Unfamilar Ceiling / The Beast Shinji wakes up in a room at Nerv Central after we see his Eva being pounded on by the angel, but we do know that some how the angel was defeated. He meets up with Misato to get his lodging assignment which places him in single quarters, but Misato feels he needs somebody to be with and chooses to take him in. After the two get setteled in and Misato's pet penguin is introduced. Shinji is alone in his "lovely sweet" remembering the battle with the angel. After getting a hole put through the head of his Eva, it rises, regenerates its damaged areas, and start to pound on the angel until it self destructs. The episode ends with Misato realizing that she was only thinking that Shinji was only a tool instead of a person, so she decides to tell Shinji that he did a noble thing and should be proud of himself. "Episode 3: The Phone That Never Rings / A Transfer" It has been nearly 3 weeks after the 3rd Angel attacked and Shinji is still willing to pilot the Eva only on the idea that he has to do what he is told. Misato is concerned about this and the fact it has been 2 weeks since Shinji has gone to his new school yet it seems that he has no friends. This does change when he is tricked into telling his entire class that he his the pilot who saved Tokyo-3, but also he has gained an enemy, Toji Suzuhara whose little sister was injured in the battle, and for that Shinji is beaten up between periods. Shinji, feeling even more depressed than usual now, is called into action to face the 4th Angel, and during this battle, Eva's power cable is snapped giving him only 5 minutes to defeat the Angel. To make make matters worse he has to protect Toji and his friend who conviced him to escape the shelter to watch the battle, Kensuke Aida, by letting them enter the entry plug. Episode 4: Rain, Escape, and Afterwards / The Hedgehogs Dilema Shinji has skipped school for 4 days and on the fifth he has runaway. Heinji keeps thinking he has to force himself to go back, and after meeting up and camping with Kensuke, it seems he might go back. Well Nerv has made it that he will come back based on their decision. Shinji's attitude hasn't changed, so Misato forces him to resign. Misato soon realizes this won't change Shinji for the better, but is it to late to make sure he doesn't leave. |

Episode 5: Rei Beyond Her Heart / Rei I Shinji is now getting along a lot better in Tokyo-3, but confusion strikes him when he notices his father's hand are badly burnt. Ritsuko tells Shinji about the failed activation test involving Unit 00, and Commander Ikari opened the super heated entry plug to rescue the pilot, Rei Ayanami. Later at the training facility, Shinji sees Rei having a conversation, seemingly personal, with his father. That night, Ritsuko has come over for a dinner cooked by Misato, and asks Shinji to give Rei her new ID card. After an embarrasing moment (well atleast for Shinji) the next morning, Shinji is trying to asks Rei why she is going to do the reactivation test of Unit 00 after her injuries in the first test and is slapped by Rei for not having faith in Ikari's work. The Reactivation test is successful, but the 5th Angel has come to attack. Its self defense mechanism is to blast any enemies that come close to it, so an Eva seems to be ineffective. Episode 6: Showdown in Tokyo-3 / Rei II Three more seconds and Unit 01 would have had an energy beam sent straight through it. Luckily Shinji wasn't injured physically, but his mental condition is unknown. The angel's goal is to use a drill to reach the geofront, but it will take about 10 hr. to drill through the 22 levels of armor on the way to it. Misato's plan is to have Unit 01 act as a sniper to shoot a beam powerful enough to break through the angels AT field which needs all the electricity in Japan while Unit 00 will protect the other Eva with a shield that was once part of the space shuttle to endure the blast. Shinji is told about this and he isn't willing to pilot, but he won't allow Rei to take his responsibility. At midnight the battle begins and Eva Unit 01 has to hit the angel in one shot since they might not have the time to fire a second. |
Episode 7: A Human Work / A Human Creation Nerv might have some competition in the business of protecting the earth from Angels, when a nonmilitary company creates a computer controlled mecha called Jet Alone, and Misato and Ritsuko have to see the demonstration. The machine doesn't need a outside power source since it runs on a nuclear reactor and it doesn't rely on something as fragile as a 14 year old. During the test, Jet Alone goes berzerk, and the control rods are not entering the reactor with a meltdown chance that is at 99.9998%. Despite the humilation Nerv faced at the dinner from the head of the Jet Alone Project, Misato decides she will go and try to shut the machine on from the computer inside it. Unit 01 is needed to help with Misato's operation, but Shinji is very reluctant in letting her take such a risk. Episode 8: Asuka Strikes Misato has invited Shinji and his friends to go on a cruise since they're probably cramped up in the mountains. Well, she actually invited them to an aircraft carrier of the Pacific Fleet to be introduced to the Second Child, Asuka Langley Soryu from Germany, and Toji hits it off pretty well with her. She also here to make sure that Unit 02 is transferred to Tokyo. Unfortunately for Misato, Asuka's current guardian, Kaji, is also aboard, and is telling interesting stories about his past with Misato. The arrogant Asuka is acting very proud about her position until Kagi tells her about how well Shinji was able to synchronize with Unit 01, so she takes Shinji aside to boast about how Unit 02 is the first combat designed Evangelion, and that Eva 00 was the prototype and Eva 01 was the testtype. Soon the 6th Angel attacks, and despite Misato's efforts, the Admiral of the fleet won't give Nerv a chance, so Asuka gets Shinji to help her activate Unit 02. The battle insues underwater, but B-type equipment that the Eva is using won't work under water, and the Eva is stuck in the teeth of the angel. Shinji has to fight the grasp the angel and the pounding Asuka for him taking control of the Eva. Episode 9: With One Accord in a Flash / Both of You Dance Like You Want to Win Shinji, Toji, and Kensuke are now trying to cope with having Asuka as a classmate. She's become the most popular student at the school, but Rei seems uneffective by the presence of her new, fellow pilot. During the same day, the 7th Angel is about to attack Tokyo 3 and Unit 01 and 02 are sent to intercept. Asuka uses her lance to spit the angel in two instead of working with Shinji, and the two halfs form into 2 new angels form an defeat the Evas. An N2 mine was then used which depleted 28% of the Angel which gives Nerv 6 days before the next attack. Misato's job is on the line for this mishap, and she has to take advice from Kagi to get the pilots to work together. Now Asuka is Shinji, Misato, and Pen Pen's roommate and the two pilots have to do the same as each other to prepare for a 62 sec. choreographed attack. Shinji is the least reluctant because if Asuka can't work with him, Rei can. This factor motivates Asuka to do this only to prove she is a better pilot than Rei. Episode 10: Magma Diver Asuka is pissed off that all the pilots are on standby and can't go on the school trip while Shinji was pretty sure this would occur, so this make her wish that they could attack the angels first to avoid her boredom. Well it seems they might have the opportunity to when a crystalis form angel that is not yet born in a volcano. The plan is to capture it, but if they fail the third impact may occur. Will Asuka succeed or will Rei take her place since she is willing to wear an inflated entry plug suit. Episode 11: In the Still of Darkness / The Day Tokyo-3 Stood Still Ritsuko and the development team are running the prolonged Eva Unit 00 reactivation test, when suddenly the power goes down in the Geofront and the rest of Tokyo-3. This ends up trapping everyone at Nerv in, Misato is stuck in an elevator with Kagi, and the children trying to find their way to Nerv HQ by the indirect path with Asuka leading them. The back up system seems to have gone down to which is impossible unless sabotaged. As luck would have it an acid spuing Angel is on its way to make a direct attack at Nerv, so Ikari goes and manually sets up the Evas, but can the kids make it to the cage in time and defeat the angel with only 5 minutes of power. Rei decides to use air vents to try to get to the cage faster, but how are they going to succeed when Shinji can't see in front of him since Asuka will kill him if he accidently looks up her skirt. Episode 12: The Value of a Miracle Is... / She said, "Don't make other suffer for your own personal hatred" Misato has been promoted to major and everyone is excited about this except for Shinji, Rei (she doesn't attend the party) and Misato. Misato tells Shinji about her past, and that she signed up to for vengence against the angels for causing the Second Impact and for her father who she doesn't know if she loves or hates him. On Misato's first time controlling the Geofront's activities, a large angel is floating above the earth and is dropping sections of itself as bombs that are so powerful a near miss could destroy Tokyo-3. They can't get the help of Ikari since the AT Field of the angel is jamming their transmission, Misato makes up a plan that has a 10,000 to 1 shot of working according to the Magi, and Ritsuko is trying to convince Misato to give up on her vengence and evacuate the HQ. Episode 13: Angel Invasion / Lilliputian Hitcher The Magi super computers have just been check up in preparation for the Eva Auto Pilot test where to get clear reading on the pilots synchronization in this experimental system, the kids can't where any clothing or their plug suits. During the test there is corosion occuring through out the geofront, and it does start breaking into the area of the simulation Evas. Rei's sim then start to move without any her controlling it, and they try to laser the corosion away, but the sim launches an AT Field and it now has a blood type of blue. The children are ejected from the sims, and Eva Unit 01 has been launched to avoid contamination. This angel is constructed by nano machines the size of viruses (and you thought the Red Dwarf crew had it bad) and acts as a parasite which allows it to hack into the Melchior Magi computer and launches a self destruct program that will take affect one it conquers the other 2 computers. To stop this angel, the Geofront would have to be destroyed or Ritsuko must hack into the angel and make it self destruct. |
Episode 14: Seele, Throne of Souls / Weaving a Story
Lets review shall we. There have been 8 angels that have attacked in the year 2015 and each time Nerv was able to use the Evas, but there is a rumor going around that there was a ninth attack but no facts support it. Now a test is being ran on the idea that certain pilots can operate both the Test and Prototype Evas. The 2 pilots are Rei and Shinji. The test seems to work fine with Rei in Unit 01, and Shinji seems to be doing fine in Unit 00. Suddenly, Shinji is seeing the thoughts of Rei and then the Eva goes berzerk and is trying to destroy Shinji or Rei, who was standing in the same spot Ikari was when the first activation test occurred. Episode 15: Lie and Silence / Those women longed for the touch of others lips, and thus invite their kisses Misato, Ritzuko, and Kaji are invited to another wedding of one of their friends and, Misato is feeling a tad insecure about not being married at age 29, and which may promote some unexpected feelings towards Kaji, especially after one to many drinks. Meanwhile, Asuka has a blind date with one of Hikari's friends, Shinji is visiting his mother's grave with his father, and Rei is missing a smeg load of school. This is all I can say without revealing the ending to the episode. Episode 16: Sickness Unto Death and... / Splitting of the Breast Another "sinc" test has been taken and Asuka is pissed. Shinji has now passed her ratings which would makes him the best pilot, but now he's even getting a little cocky. An Unidentified object then flies over Tokyo 3, but its pattern is orange, so it can't be classified as an angel. The pilots set up for the attack and the competition between Asuka and Shinji who accepts the challenge to take point only adds to the confusion. Shinji eventually tries to destroy the object alone, but it disappears but leaves its shadow which sucks Eva Unit 01 into it. Fear of losing the other two Evas makes it so that Shinji has 16 hours to escape before his life support gives out or Ritsuko goes through with her plan to use 92 N2 Mines to destroy the newly classified 12th Angel. |

Episode 17: The 4th Child / Fourth Children Disaster occurs in Nevada when Nerv's U.S. Second Branch disappears, possibly into a giant sea of durac, either way they have lost the experimental German S2 engine and Eva Unit 04. The U.S., fearing the possible lost of their first branch, decide to send Eva Unit 03^_^ to Japan to be controlled by Nerv in Tokyo 3. A problem does exist still since they have to decide who will pilot the Eva, the "newly found Fourth Child", or Rei's Dummy Plug. Misato and Ritsuko determine that Rei and Asuka won't have any problems with the assignment of the new pilot, but they are not prepared to tell Shinji because of the emotional situations he has had. Episode 18: The Judgement of Life / Ambivalence The activation test is finally scheduled to occur for Eva Unit 03^_^, but we find out the Eva is possesed by an Angel and the test site explodes with Ritsuko and Misato in it. Since the fate of Misato is unknown Gendo Ikari takes her place in commanding the attack on the Eva, I Mean the 13th Angel. Asuka is downed by surprise, Eva Unit 00's arm is severed while the nerve links are still attached to Rei, so its up to Shinji, but can he kill another human. If not, Ikari does have an ace up his sleeve since he feels the pilots life is irrelivant. Episode 19: A Man's Fight / Introjection Shinji has gone over the edge after the destruction of Eva Unit03^_^, and threatens to take out Nerv Central. After the a**hole, Gendo Ikari, increases the presure of the LCL, Shinji is knock out and hospitalized a long the 4th Child. When Shinji finally awakens, he faces his father and announces he'll never pilot an Eva again. He is at the train station waiting to leave Tokyo-3 when the 14th angel attacks. This angel is so powerful that it can melt 18 layers of the geofront's proctective armor which forces the Evas to fight on a total defense. Unit 02 is decapitated, and Rei fails with her suicide attack with an N2 mine making it very easy for the angel to reach Adam which would result in the third impact. Unit 01 is refusing to operate with the dummi plug, so Shinji decides to go out to save his friends, but he the battery runs out, but is Shinji totally screwed. Episode 20: Weaving a Story 2: The Oral Stage / Form of Man, Form of Mind Nerv Central has been destroyed, forcing the crew to work at the back up station with out the Magi's help. Selee is seriously pissed off about what has just happened and consider taking Nerv away from the a**hole, Gendo Ikari. Nerv feels they have Unit 01 in some form of sleep, but this is indefinate, but anyway they have to save the pilot whose ego is floating around in the Eva without a body. Here Shinji is learning about himself and why he pilots Eva which goes to such a great extent that it seems he is fine the way he is. This puts a major crimp on any attempt to rescue him. |
Episode 21: The Birth of Nerv / He Was Aware that He Was Still a Child Seele is kind of pissed at Commander Ikari for creating a living god ( Eva Unit 01 ) and their trust of him is very questionable. To get some answers they have one of Nerv's personnel who has seemed to have played a huge role in the development of Adam to kidnap Commander Fyutski. The committee interrogates the professor about all he knows about the Ikari family, Kahern ( the original organization that started Project E and I ), Nerv, and even Rei Ayanami to try to figure out if Ikari is a rogue and to hopefully use Fyutski against Ikari's next actions. In the mean time Misato waits for the Professor to be found and to find and punish the kidnapper. Episode 22: At Least be Human / Don't be We figure that everything would be back to normal now that Shinji is back and Unit 01 is reconstrained, but now Asuka problems take center stage. She is haunted by memories of her past which is now preventing her from concentrating enough to maintain a high sync ration with Unit 02. When she starts getting sympathy from the other pilots she know she's in trouble. The 15th Angel soon presents itself, but it stays to high in the stratosphere for an Eva to fight hand to hand with it. Misato decides to send Rei to act as a sniper to take the enemy out like the 5th Angel, but Asuka launches before Rei can despite this will risk her position as a pilot if she fails. Of course the Angel isn't unprepared and uses a beam to attack Unit 02 that is more harmful than brown acid at Woodstock. Eva 01 can't fight fearing that even worse things could happen with it in action, Rei's rifle isn't powerful enough to break the Angel's AT Field, and Ikari's only other option will really have Seele breathing down his neck. Episode 23: Tear / Rei III Asuka has pretty much hit rock bottom doing nothing except for staying at Hikari's and playing video games ( personally I don't think that's that bad of course this is coming from a kid whose last dat... you get the point ) and Misato is still mourning. This makes Rei the go to pilot when the new Angel attacks, but when it attacks Unit 00, it starts to bond with it. Asuka can't help since her sync ratio is under 10%, and Shinji becomes the target of the Angel. Rei decides to self destruct Unit 00, but to keep the AT Field up when she did it, she had to stay inside the Eva. Somehow Rei survived the explosion that destroyed Tokyo-3. Misato is now looking for answers and is prepared to threaten Ritsuko to get them, but Ritsuko is also prepared by making Shinji learn about Nerv's biggest secret with her. Episode 24: The Last Angel / The Begining of the End or "Knockin' on Heaven's Door Seele is now even more pissed off than ever before. They have loss Tokyo-3, Unit 00, and the Lance of Longeness, so obviously they think Ikari is power hungry. Since interrogating Ritsuko to act against Ikari fails for emotional reasons they now have a new plan. As for Shinji, since Tokyo-3 was destroyed Kensuke and Toji have left the area, Asuka can no longer pilot, and Rei is just so confusing, Shinji is left with nobody. "Fortunately" the Fifth Child arrive in the form of Kaworu Nagisa who immediately becomes friends with Shinji. There is one problems with this pilot or at least some things confusing about him which are the fact he can adjust his own sync rate with Unit 02 to whatever he wants and that Seele sent him instead of the Marduk. What is the secret behind Kaworu, or do we even want to know? Episode 25: The End of the World / Do You Love Me? Shinji only saves the human race, but for some reason he is being scolded for killing a humanoid even if it was an Angel. He's being force to accept the fact that he pilots Eva only so people can depend on him which isn't real happiness by Asuka. Yes, the irony isn't missed, so we go into mind of Asuka to see why she ended up wanting to become a pilot despite she still can't achieve true happiness. Rei is questioned by herself and they tell how she can never be happy because of why she exist. This is all a result of instrumentality and Shinji must explore the minds of his friends through the Shinji Ikari that exist in their minds with the company of the person in their own mind. He sees the mind of Misato and what she does to exist ( don't ignore me ) and Asuka's reason for trying to exist ( don't kill me ). This eventually tells his reason for trying to exist ( don't hate me ). The beauty of the Instrumentality Project is this, one will now see reality based on how they try to exist which can be changed at anytime they choose to change their reason to exist. But how? is the question Shinji ask when he sees the reality he has made for himself. Finale: The Beast That Shouted "I" at the World / Take Care of Yourself For time constraints, Nerv will not show us the Instrumentality Project's affect on Asuka, Misato, and Rei, but they will show us how it affects on Shinji Ikari. Why does Shinji refuse to exist in a perfect reality for him? There is no pain, no hatred, no restrictions, no people. Without any people how can one have his own identity? Of course why would you want an identity when all it is hatred towards you. Shinji gets the opportunity to see what reality could be like if he could change his views on life, but again how can that happen when everybody hates him. |
