Intelligence

Rahan AvatarBrains good. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. There aren’t too many rocket scientists in the Earth Special Forces. It’s usually better to cut off a Demon’s head than try and analyze why it hates its mother. But hey, it’s your character! Sometimes brains does win out over brawn. This mental attribute determines a character's ability to learn, correlate, and memorize and/or retain information. Intelligence represents both your memory and your ability to learn and think. It is important when using abilities that require complex thought processes. The higher his Intelligence, the easier it is for your character to excel at and employ "scholastic" skills (Knowledge, Science, etc. and the like). Also, this attribute is used to understand and interpret information. Some people describe Intelligence as a person's quickness of mind and judgment, but it is more than that--it is the facility for understanding and the capacity for reasoning and evaluation. Intelligence is a rating of an individual's depth and flexibility of thought.

However, low Intelligence can indicate a character who lacks the capacity to understand complicated thoughts, and who is a very slow learner--he might simply see things in terms of black and white, and can't understand that things are really in shades of gray. Characters with high Intelligence, on the other hand, are sophisticated thinkers and capable of decoding many different levels of an argument or problem. They have discerning judgment and are well able to separate truth from lies, at least when they have time to think things over. Intelligence caters to carefully reasoned judgments rather than snap decisions. Note that Intelligence and education are two seperate things; you can be brilliant but illiterate, a character could be a mental Michael Jordan but if he grew up in a different dimension without books and pencils, he'd be illiterate. Education is covered by a character's skills, which determine what he or she has learned in his or her life. Again, not too many of Vent’s team have attended prep school.

Librarians, Watchers, master manipulators, and other highly intellectual types (game designers?) tend to have high Intelligence level. 2 is the Human Average, and 6 is the normal Human Max (read: Albert Einstein in his prime). Every level up is generally considered twice as smart as the last level.

Level 1: Poor: The character is below average in this attribute. IQ 80. Intelligence 1 is below average--not mentally challenged, but certainly slow on the uptake. Attributes at level one are dangerous at the big league level. In other words, attributes at level one are not flattering and are fairly incompetent. If your character has an attribute at level one, such a character is going to be pretty feeble at some things.

Level 2: Average: This is average for Human beings. IQ 100. Most people in any given group have attributes at this level, typically with one or two levels at one or three. Nothing wrong with being average, but the character is unlikely to shine with such attributes, unless his or her skills are so high he or she can compensate.

Level 3: Good: This is above average but not extraordinary. IQ 120. Intelligence 3 indicates a bright person who can easily learn new skills, if he or she has the temperament to do so.

Level 4: Exceptional: An attribute at level 4 is well above average. IQ 140. Very few people, perhaps one out of every ten in a random group, have one or two attributes at this level. Mental attriutes at level 4 indicate near genius (Intelligence), very highly acute uncanny senses and intuition (Perception), or an "iron will" (Willpower). Not too many of those types in this game, sugar.

Level 5: Outstanding: This is the "practical" Human limit. IQ 160+. People at these levels are extraordinarily talented, able to perform complex and difficult feats with little practice. While people with attributes at level five are not "record breakers," they are among the best and the brightest. In a small or medium-sized community, only a handful have one or two attributes at this level, and they are likely to be well known for their strength, wisdom, or toughness. Cities, large college campuses, and groups of Demon fighters and elite groups of knights or warriors have more of these extraordinary individuals, but even there they are not common.

Level 6: This is the basic true Human limit. A few people with "freakish" attributes may exceed it (to level seven), but they are a handful even among the teeming billions living in the 21st century. Characters with one or more attributes at level six are very rare, something on the order of one in ten thousand, or less. People with more than one attribute at level six are perhaps ten times less common, and so on.

Level 7+: Now we're into superhuman territory. This is generally reserved for things with red glowing eyes and... Well, you get the picture. These folks can perform at a level that normal folks can hardly comprehend. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
