VIII. Armor

The armor on the MBR-25 is a low-mass lunarium tungsten composite plating that is the standard for most Terran mecha. Aside from the good protection provided against projectiles, missiles, and other kinetic weapons, this armor is also resistant to plasma globes (annihilation discs), lasers, and fair against, particle guns too, owing to the fact that the armor can flake off and evaporate in layers under fire from such high-energy weapons, taking much of the weapon's energy and converting it into the latent heat of sublimation in the armor. The armor stops all small arms fire, and has good resistance to all weapons commonly mounted on combat mecha.

The Atma provides full protection from nuclear, biological, and chemical hazards, using an overpressure cockpit environment activated by radiation and hazardous chemical sensors, or manually when biological warfare conditions are anticipated. The internal consumables supplies can provide atmosphere for three days maximum.

IX. Development

Developed at the end of the Robotech War as a replacement for the MBR-10 Excalibur, the MBR-25 Atma is a much more versatile and heavily armed destroid than its predecessor. Built by Three Stars Heavy Industries, and adopted by the RDF Army and Marines in 2050, the MBR-25 saw immediate service in the suppressing several failed rebellions and the Anti-UTG and performed admirably.

The initial version of the MBR-25, the Mk I featured mostly heavy weaponry. On the arms are two different weapon systems. A pair of particle beam cannons on the lower portion providing the close range firepower with a pair of rail guns providing the long range anti-mecha power. For anti-personnel firepower the Mk I only had a pair of autocannons which left much to be desired. Against most foes this weapon was adequate, but it lacked the endurance of a laser weapon and as such was soon supplemented by additional firepower. The Mk I also had a pair of mini-missile launchers on the legs to provide close in firepower. The Mk II differed little from its brethren save for more advanced electronics.

The Mk IV which debuted in 2059 had an even better weapon package. While retaining all the weapons mounted on the Mk I, the Mk IV mounted an additional pair of arms on its shoulders which each sported a light and heavy laser cannon for anti-personnel and close in fire support. Each also mounted three mini missile launchers giving the destroid even more firepower. These changes were also supplemented by the upgraded electronics and a new power plant. This craft was even more successful and field conversion kits were issued for all Mk I and Mk II Atma's to make them the new Mk IV.

During the next few years the destroid continued to distinguish itself in combat namely during the Transient War in 2057. However the destroid was not without its problems. It was not as agile as previous designs, but this was not a problem as long it did not face a overwhelming force. However, in 2063 the 4th Robotech War began and battles were now battles of attrition with the RDF almost always being outnumbered at least 12 to 1 and while the Atma did its best overcome these odds it could not always come through like the new mobile suits and as such it was decided after the war was over to shelve production in favor of the faster and more powerful mobile suits.
