BLAIR WITCH PROJECT - 1999 " There is no knife-carrying psychopath, prolonged gory scenes or CGI monster. There is only the darkness and the secrets that it hides. It scares us on a level which everyone can relate to." This is a wonderful movie to see if you're in the mood for great acting, heart pounding suspense, and edge-of-your-seat terror --- WEBMASTER "In October of 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkitsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary. A year later their footage was found." Plot: The three chain-smoking hipsters shoot video of local townies to put together the legend, which began in 1785 when a woman was accused of practising black arts by local children. After she was banished, the children and half the townspeople disappeared. A century later, a search party looking for another missing child was discovered tied together at the arms and legs -- and disemboweled. In 1941, a hermit admitted to ritualistically killing seven children at the behest of an old woman ghost. By the time our trio arrives on the scene, only one person in the town of Burkittsville, the former site of Blair, claims to have seen a witch, and she's apparently nuts. The setup established, the three students hike into the woods. Heather (Heather Donahue) is the leader of the project. Her partners/underlings are two regular guys, Joshua (Joshua Leonard) and Michael (Michael Williams), who are looking forward to logging some camera time ... and maybe some quality time with Heather. Their relationship is entirely recognizable. They discuss their film subjects, nutty and otherwise, and related topics, like Gilligan's Island and the movie Deliverance. Then they realize they're lost. A weekend trip turns into five days. After the second night, they hear strange sounds outside their tent, and when they emerge in the morning, their campsite is surrounded by carefully placed piles of rocks -- and later, sinister sculptures made of sticks and vine. The possibility exists that the symbols are intended as a prank by some locals, but as Mike points out: "No redneck is this creative." Terrorized, hungry, lost, the relationship between the three deteriorates as the two men blame Heather for their increasingly dire predicament. Then things get very, very bad.
