DAWN OF THE DEAD - 1978 "A really scary film with a superb make-up and special effects!" --- WEBMASTER Plot: Dawn of the Dead, the follow up to the cult favorite Night of the Living Dead (1968) has the bodies of the recently dead awakening and returning to life by some mysterious and unknown force. A local news reporter, Fran (Gaylen Ross) has decided to escape Philadephia in a helicopter with her boyfriend, Stephen (David Emge), a professional pilot. Two other policemen, Roger and Peter (Scott H.Reiniger, Ken Foree, respectively) have decided to join in on the party and fun. However, the policemen had problems of their own. In the beginning of the film, the police had besieged a building full of minority citizens, attempting to hunt down psychotic criminals. Instead, the SWAT team police had ended up murdering several bystanders (one unlucky victim gets his head blown off, shown in graphic detail frame by frame), and taken many others into custody. The police eventually are confronted with the dead people who return to life as zombies, with several casualties ensuing. Most of the cops are killed, but a few of them were lucky to escape. Among the two survivors were Peter and Roger, mentioned earlier. With Fran and Stephen, the foursome managed to escape the city via helicopter before the truly bad stuff happens...NOT!!! The four people needed to find fuel. As they ride inside the helicopter, they watched below then the "Rednecks," as Stephen aptly called them hunting down the zombies one at a time. Still, this didn't decrease the growing zombie population. When the gas started to run low, the people had to land on top of an elaborate mall and shopping center. The problem was that they found themselves overwhelmed by the flesh eating cannibals. The four survivors battle the zombies using the weapons they have...but an even deadlier pestilence awaits these people... Zombies take over the world. A small group of people (including a couple of SWAT team officers) escape the carnage of the deteriorating cities in a helicopter. Eventually they find their way to a huge sprawling shopping mall in rural Pittsburg (which has been completely overrun by zombies.) The Group tangles with the zombies several times and eventually secures the mall. You might think without anymore violence or action that the movie would jsut get boring there right? WRONG! After taking the mall, the group makes it into their own little paradise. They have everything they want inside, they loot the gun stores, rob the bank, target practice with dummies, go shopping. Of course on the outside of their little microcosm of perpetual bliss lies a world in chaos, humanity gradually loses the battle against the zombie menace and society cruimbles. Cast and Crew: Directed by: George A. Romero Ken Foree Scott H. Reiniger David Emge Gaylen Ross Tom Savini Richard France Taso N. Stavrakis |
