daydead DAY OF THE DEAD - 1985

"George A. Romero's really, really gruesome masterpiece"
--- WEBMASTER

Plot:
Day of the Dead is set in the near future, when zombies have killed off like 99% of
the human population. A small group of survivors in southern Florida are all couped
up in a hastily-made bunker, where the scientists try to find a way to destroy the
zombie plague once and for all.
The beleaguered human remnants consist of Sarah (Lori Cardille), a strong and
intelligent scientist, John (Terry Alexander), a pilot who just wants to get the hell
out of there, Dr. Logan (Richard Liberty, from Just Cause and Flight of the Navigator)
as a mentally insane scientist, and Captain Rhodes (Joe Pilato, from The Demolitionist
and Married People, Single Sex) as the even loonier and more belligerent marine.

However, the soldiers stuck with them (led by psychopathic Pilato) however have other
plans. They begin to grow weary of life among their little blue brothers and decide
it's time to move on. This, of course, conflicts with what the scientist want and
leads to a lot of bickering and childish name-calling.

Still, despite the fact that Day of the Dead is a weak follow up to Dawn of the Dead,
Day of the Dead has plenty of fine moments. The relationship between Dr. Logan and
his "prized" zombie "Bub" (magnificently portrayed by Howard Sherman) is particularly
interesting and even humorous. Also, Day of the Dead shows the consequences of what
would happen if people would rather fight and argue with each other than work
together. By the end of Day of the Dead is particulary a gut-wrenching, stomach churning,
skin-ripping moment where you'll literally lose your lower half! (Man!!! I got to keep
my mouth shut!!!) Day of the Dead is a very talkative film with an ending that lacks
coherence...and sense. The ending espeically defiled all comprehension, though Romero
probably wanted it to be ambiguous. Unfortunately, the flaws in this film outweigh
the assets.

You can't blame George A. Romero, he did his best with a constrained budget, an
abridged script, and I'm sure that even he had higher expectations out of this film.
