Cloud Strife
Cloud, the main character of FFVII, is an ex-SOLDIER First Class who was recruited into AVALANCHE originally as a mercenary. However, he eventually begins to care more about AVALANCHE's cause after he participates in a few more missions.
When he was younger, Cloud wanted to be just like his idol (and later in his career in SOLDIER, his "war buddy"), Sephiroth. However, an incident at Nibelheim changed everything... |

Aeris Gainsborough
Aeris was a flower seller living in the slums of Sector 5 in Midgar until she met Cloud on the street after the first bombing mission. She was living with her foster mother, who kindly took her in after Aeris' mother, Ifalna, died. Gradually, she gets pulled into the group by events which occur during the course of the story. She hires Cloud as her bodyguard in return for one date, and soon becomes quite fond of him. Aeris is supposedly the last of the Cetra and is often referred to as "the Ancient" by the Shinra.

Barret Wallace
The leader of AVALANCHE, Barret makes his feelings about Shinra, Inc. very obvious. His reason for hating Shinra began when the company built a Mako reactor near his hometown, Corel Village, and destroyed it in a reactor accident, killing his wife, Myrna, in the process. The loss of his arm was also caused by Shinra, and it is now replaced by a gun arm. He is very bitter about the harm Shinra has done and fights with this in mind. Barret has an adopted 4-year-old daughter named Marlene (her real father is Barret's late friend Dyne). |

Tifa Lockheart
Tifa is one of the original members of AVALANCHE. She is a childhood friend of Cloud's. She served as a guide when Sephiroth and Cloud went to Nibelheim 5 years ago to investigate the Nibel Reactor. When the town of Nibelheim was burned down, her father was killed, and she was taken away from Nibelheim by her martial arts instructor. Like Aeris, Tifa's interest in Cloud goes beyond friendship. She constantly reminds Cloud of his promise to her that he would come to save her when she is in danger. |

Red XIII (Nanaki)
Red XIII was a live laboratory experiment in Hojo's lab in the Shinra Building before he was rescued by Cloud, Barret, and Tifa. Although he is 48 years old and acts very deep and serious, he is actually only an adolescent, equivalent to a human 16-year-old in development. Nanaki is his true name; he is the last of his kind, the protectors of Cosmo Canyon (Valley of the Fallen Star), the son of two warriors. His parents were killed in the battle against the Gi. Nanaki was adopted by an old man named Bugenhagen, who he calls "Grandpa." |

Curious about this prediction, he chooses to join them. However, they soon find out that Cait is a spy for the Shinra. The cat body is merely a toy which he is controlling from the Shinra building. They also find out that he has Marlene as a hostage. Later, it is revealed that his true identity is Reeve, Head of Urban Development in Shinra, Inc. However, he is not evil, but he stays in Shinra in order to protect the people of Midgar. |

Cid Highwind
A skilled pilot with many dreams, Cid Highwind once worked for Shinra, Inc. before it became an electric company. He was once going to be the first astronaut, but the mission failed. A shuttle technician named Shera had still been in the engine room checking oxygen tanks when they were about to lift off, so Cid pressed the Emergency Shut Down button to stop the launch in order to save Shera's life. Shinra, Inc. lost interest in space exploration after that, and Cid never forgave Shera for what she did. Cid was further angered by Shinra when they confiscated his airship and tried to confiscate his plane, the Tiny Bronco, as well. He joined Cloud on the basis that they were all against Shinra. |
