Q
(Desmond Llewellyn)
Codename for the head of MI6's Q (Quartermaster) Branch, a position held since the early 1960s by Major Geoffrey Boothroyd. Priot to this, Boothroyd had held the positions of Armourer and Equipment Officer. Q's speciality is in designing specialised equipment for field agents - these gadgets have saved Bond's life on many occasions. Despite this, Bond is always flippantly dismissive of Q's efforts, something which annoys him no end. He also hates Bond's cavalier attitude to maintainance - his briefings to 007 are almost invariably concluded with a request for Bond to bring Q's equipment back in one piece, which he very rarely does. Nevertheless, he does seem to have a grudging affection for 007.
Q prefers to work from his labs in London, but on occasion goes into the field himself. Usually he is there to accompany M or to deliver equipment to Bond, but from time to time he has been known to help out 007 in more direct ways, even using his own leave to help Bond out in his hunt for Sanchez.
Q has children, for whom he once built a voice-changing machine for fun, and is obviously starting to become overwhelmed by computerisation - he has trouble operating the Identigraph, and finds the remote control of Bond's BMW 750 troublesome in the extreme. He takes some kind of pills for his health, and is partial to baguettes for lunch. (GF, TB, YOLT, OHMSS, DAF, TMWTGG, TSWLM, MR, FYEO, OP, AVTAK, TLD, LTK, GE, TND)

Q Craft
A modified Glastron Scimitar speedboat, with a rearward-firing homing torpedo launcher, twin mine-laying racks and a bulletproof screen that rises to protect the passenger compartment. Bond uses all of these to dispose of his attackers on the Taperape river in Brazil, before being caught between Jaws and a huge waterfall. He uses the boat's final gadget - a hang-glider which springs open when the roof of the boat is ejected - to make an escape before the Q Craft plunges over the falls. (MR)

Quantico
Home of the FBI, and also the place where Kilifer promises Sanchez will be imprisoned. (LTK)

Quarrel
(John Kitzmuller)
A Cayman Islander working as a charter fisherman in Jamaica, and also a CIA agent under Felix Leiter, who becomes one of Bond's allies. His greatest fear is the 'dragon' which inhabits Crab Key - ultimately, it kills him when the superstition turns out to be a flame-throwing tank painted to look like a dragon. (DN)

Quarrel Junior
(Roy Stewart)
Apparently the son of Bond's late friend, Quarrel Jr has followed in the family tradition - by working for the CIA undercover as a Caribbean fisherman. His fishing boat contains a radio and surveillance gear hidden behind a rack of fishing rods, opened by pulling down on a coat hook. He is seemingly the one who warns Bond about Rosie's duplicity. He helps Bond infiltrate Kananga's estate by towing his hang glider from his boat, and later assists in the destruction of Kananga's poppy fields by planting incendiary bombs. Unlike his namesake, he survives a mission with Bond. (LALD)

Quarterback
Radio codename for the CIA operations centre at Circus Circus in Las Vegas. (DAF)

Queen Elizabeth
A Cunard Line luxury liner that caught fire and sank in Hong Kong harbour in 1971, in mysterious circumstances. MI6 took advantage of the fact that the capsized wreck remained in the harbour for some years to build a completely secure operations headquarters within the hulk. Amongst other things, it is being used to recover a Chinese fighter that had crashed in the sea and been secretly brought to Hong Kong. (TMWTGG)

Queen of Cups
Tarot card that, in an upside-down position, signifies a deceitful woman. It is this card that alerts Bond to Rosie Carver's treachery. (LALD)

Queens Club
A private, members-only establishment in Kingston, Jamaica. Frequented by Strangways, Principal Secretary Playdell-Smith, Professor Dent and General Potter, amongst others. (DN)

Queen Victoria Street
The location of the College of Arms in London, EC4. (OHMSS)

Quiche de Cadenet
Something that Bond effortlessly knocks up from Stacey Sutton's leftovers. Apparently, real men do eat quiche. (AVTAK)

Quist
(Bill Cummings)
One of Largo's underlings, who keeps an eye on Bond for his boss. He tries to discover more about him by breaking into his hotel room, but Bond discovers him and scalds him in the shower before kicking him out. His failure is rewarded by being tossed into Largo's shark pool. (TB)

Q78513
Registration number of the squad car driven by the San Francisco police captain chasing Bond. The car ends up being crushed under the counterweight of a bridge as it is raised in a futile attempt to stop 007. (AVTAK)
