I decided to try making my own rendition of Misty, the female lead of the best television series ever: Pokémon (a profound program only for the intellectually elite). By nature of the rather simplistic art style of the show, characters are recognized by key features, such as hair style or clothing. I considered giving Misty a bit more detail than the animators had, but I soon realized that I would have to get the hair exactly right, or the portrait would not be of Misty. This issue of conflicting art styles is most problematic when the characters are usually drawn in a simple style. If you look at Final Fantasy artist Amano's rendition of Cloud, it looks nice and it is detailed, but it looks absolutely nothing like Cloud in FFVII.
Another thing about this picture: it helped me realize that my pencil sketches don't scan in well.
