Kansas City is used to mean both the city of Kansas City in Missouri and the Kansas City metropolitan area (or Greater Kansas City). The metropolitan area includes cities from both Kansas and Missouri states, among them Kansas City, Kansas and North Kansas City, Missouri. The area north of the Missouri River is also referred to as Kansas City North. So, do not say Kansas [state] when you mean Kansas City. Clear?

(I just found out today, 20 September 1997, that there are two other Kansas Cities -- Kansas City, Oregon and Kansas City, Tennessee.)

Kansas City was named for the Kansa Indians, who once lived in the area.

Kansas City is also often called the Heart of America because of its close proximity to the geographic center of continental United States.
