TEAM DAING STOPS TEAM NILAGA'S
14-WEEK WINNING STREAK.

(March 22, 1999. Norristown, PA)

Team Nilaga was riding high on its 14-week winning blitz when their chariot was turned into a mere pumpkin by Team Daing. The seemed David vs. Goliath match-up at the start of the game became a battle of equal determination up to the very end. Jun Abrenica's feat (a personal high-series and a high game) was the revelation that paved the way for Team Daing's onslaught. The glory ultimately came when Edgar Ramilo threw the final and deciding slingshot in the last frame to capture a 3-1 victory by just a single pin (1854-1853).

The loss, however, was just a harmless bump for Team Nilaga (Jonathan Alfonso, Rachel Arcia, Tina Pacia, Penn Tanio), who continues to dominate the team standing with 75 points. Team Daing (Dave Sanchez, Bing Canete, Jun Abrenica, Edgar Ramilo) is in 9th place with 50.5 points.

LANDAYAN RECLAIMS HIGH GAME/SERIES;
TEAM OTAP MOVES TO THIRD SPOT

(March 05, 1999. Norristown, PA)

Team Bopis rallied behind the record-breaking series of its captain, Bernard Landayan, 205-222-269 beating Team Lumpia, 3.5-0.5. Bernard's 269 third game score now stands as the league's highest so as his 696 series score. He also made the league's first eight-strikes-in-a-row and added another five-strikes-in-a-row to his list of baggers.

Team Nilaga may be the outright champion at this juncture but the race for second place is just getting more interesting. Team Otap gained another four points as they moved in front of Team Sinigang. They are now third just four-and-a-half points behind second seed Team Bopis.

INTERESTING MATCH-UPS. The four front running teams will face each other this Friday. Team Nilaga (1) will go against Team Bopis (2) and Team Otap (3) will collide with Team Sinigang (4).

JOEL DEO AND TEAM OTAP STRIKES AGAIN!
(February 26, 1999. Norristown, PA)

Joel Deo shot his best series yet, 159-253-205, during the victory of the surging Team Otap over Team Wonton, 4-0. Joel's second game score of 253 now stands as the league's highest scratch game ever. He also bagged two turkeys and a six-strikes-in-row in the process. Team Otap jumped from 7th place to 4th place with 47 points, just a point behind third place Team Sinigang and five points behind second place Team Bopis.

RICO LONTOC: 216-233-214
(February 05, 1999. Norristown, PA)

Rico Lontoc was in the zone as he scored an outstanding 663 series for Team Valenciana as they crushed Team Kare-Kare, 3-1. He now owns the league's high-series currently held by Bernard Landayan at 647. He also made three turkeys and a four-bagger in the process. In the previous week he was zeroing-in for a possible 650-series as he shot 215 and 227 in the first two games until he lost his touch and only managed a 140 in the third game. Lontoc also improved his average 184.69, more than three points up from his previous 181. This also closed the gap between him and the league-leader Bernard Landayan as the latter lost a point from his average when he only managed a 534-series.

Edgar Ramilo (163.55 avg.) had a better night than Louie Yango (162.12 avg.) as he claimed the third spot in the male bowler's average ranking. Cesar Rivera (163.10 avg.) is now fourth. Yango fell to fifth.

TEAMS TO WATCH: Joel Deo's Team Otap who came all the way from the 24th place to 11th place. They now have 36 team points. The resurgent Team Fried Chicken and Team Valenciana started winning games again, the former is currently fifth and the latter seventh.

MEDINA AND VALDEVIEZO
EARN ABC/WIBC HONORS

(January 15, 1999. Norristown, PA)

Lani Medina bowled an outstanding 181-181-181 series last night that earned her a triplicate award from the Women's International Bowling Congress (WIBC). Her performance helped Team Sinigang win a closely fought battle against Team Daing, 3-1. Their win enabled them to maintain their number two spot in the team points race. Medina's 181-average also boosted her lead among the bowlers in the female individual average ranking.

Romeo Valdeviezo single-handedly defended Team Afritada from an apparent loss, as three of his teammates were not able to make it to the games. Beating all the odds, he shot a 181-138-216 series as he beat Team Jacobina, 3-1. His 216 third-game score earned him a 100-Pin Over Average award from the American Bowling Congress (ABC).

FREEZEBOWL 99
(January 08, 1999. Norristown, PA)

Unfavorable weather condition may have prevented some bowlers from making it to the bowling alley but the PPBL 98-99 Season started the year 1999 with a bang. Snow turned into sleet and then into freezing rain but the majority of the PPBL bowlers made it to Facenda without any incidents. It turned out most of the leagues held at Facenda that night was cancelled. The alley was unusually silent when the first few bowlers arrived. It was already 9:00 PM but only a handful of bowlers were around. The league was on the verge of cancellation, too. But as the roll-off time of 9:15PM approaches there were almost 50 bowlers present. And then the following events took place.

David Ardamoy of Team Ube found his mark early as he exploded for a 175-180-246 performance to help his team beat Team Chopsuey, 3-1. Ardamoy's 246 third-game score is the highest game any player in PPBL has ever scored. His 602 series incidentally was his personal best.

Rachel Arcia of the league-leading Team Nilaga also set the league's highest game ever score by a female bowler at 227. Her 547-series performance also helped her team beat Team Yema, 3-1. Team Nilaga continued their winning ways as they pull away from the pack with 41 points. The second best team, Team Sinigang, has 32 points.

Roy Calleja of Team Wonton had a 229-144-212 series as his team beat Team Escabeche, 4-0. Calleja added another turkey to his list. He now has nine. He also joined the list of players with six-strikes-in-a-row and the 200 club. Joining him as the new members of the 200 club were Francis Carangan (204, Team Fried Chicken) and Hector Tan (205, Team Hamonado).

1999 SEGMENT STARTS JANUARY 8
(January 06, 1999. Philadelphia, PA)

After a two-week holiday break it is time to head to the lanes again. Attendance is expected to go back to its normal number as the vacationing bowlers come back from the Philippines, California, Florida, etc., etc.

The Tournament is on its 13th week. There are fourteen more weeks to go. That means anything can still happen. Most of the teams are still capable of taking over first place currently being held by Team Nilaga. They have a commanding seven-point lead over the second-place Team Bopis. Teams Sinigang, Valenciana, Chopsuey, Ube and Ginataan are not too far behind. Because of the new handicapping scheme implemented this year there is no lead safe at this early juncture.

As the Phillypinoy bowlers continue to improve their skills records are also expected to be broken this year. Boy Placido's high game of 244 has almost been shadowed several times by different bowlers. Several bowlers already received awards from the American Bowling Congress and Women's International Bowling Congress. They are as follows:

ABC Awards:
. Rangie Zurbano – triplicate (146-146-146)
. Boy Placido – 100 pins over average

WIBC Awards:
. Lalac Timoteo – 75 pins over average and 500 series
. Boots Zurbano – 500 series

A striking New Year to everybody!

PLACIDO NOW HOLDS
THE HIGH GAME RECORD
AT 244

(November 13, 1998. Norristown, PA)

Marcelino "Boy" Placido of  Team Inihaw had a sizzling hot second game when he tallied 244 pinfalls on his way to the record books for the league's highest single game score. Boy had his best average in eight weeks at 164 as he helped his team to beat Team Afritada, 3-1.  He also gained a spot in the elite Six-Bagger group and in the Weekly Top Ten List. Friday-the-thirteenth meant badluck? Boy didn't think so.

TEAM NILAGA PULLS AWAY
(November 06, 1998. Norristown, PA)

Team Nilaga led by their captain Penn Tanio swept their last four opponents in as many weeks garnering sixteen points in the process to top the league's team standings with 23 points. Their closest rival, Team Chopsuey, has 18 points. Their seventh week win was highlighted by Rachel Arcia's 598 (199 avg.) performance which also sets a league record for the most pinfalls scored by a female bowler. With nineteen more weeks to go the team faces a tough task of maintaining the top position.  Team Nilaga (Penn, Tina, Atan and Rachel) is hoping they are up to the challenge. Only one thing is sure -- it will not be a walk-in-the-park.

ROCERO SETS NEW
HIGH GAME RECORD
AT 243.

(October 02, 1998. Norristown, PA)

Nonoy Rocero of Fried Chicken Team rolled a six Bagger en route to a 243 game-one pin falls setting a new league high game record.  The highest single game score is one of the most coveted awards of the league.  The old record at 225 was set last season by three bowlers, Benjie Hinahon, Edgar Ramilo and Elmer Berico.

THE PHILLY-PINOY BOWLING
OPENS ITS THIRD SEASON

(September 25, 1998.  Norristown, PA)

by Penn Tanio

Once again, one of the most fun-filled events in bowling, the Philly-Pinoy Bowling Tournament opened its third season with eager enthusiasm last September 25, 1998, at the Facenda-Whitaker Lanes in Norristown, PA.

This season will again be exciting with 24 teams scheduled to play with a total of 96 participants mostly from the greater Philadelphia area. They were welcomed in a brief but refreshing opening message by Marilyn Montero, chairman of the event. She also emphasized 'fun' and 'friendship' as among the major goals of the games.

The games were enlivened and kicked-off by the ceremonial bowl of top male and female bowler from the 2nd Philly-Pinoy, Bono Ortiz and Mina Cruz - the  +Titanic , duo.

The 3rd Philly-Pinoy will run weekly through September 25, 1998 to April 1999 and is likely to prove just as effervescent as the 1997-1998 event. All the ingredients are there to make it an exciting event. Our ABC membership, the participation of new bowlers, and the aspirations and challenge of the previous top ten players give us reason to believe this will be a delightful tournament.
