A Philippine LeafHot!

This is a terrific site for anyone who wants to learn more about Philippine history from a personal study, by the author, Hector Santos. The site explores some ancient Filipino writing systems and the way Tagalog was spoken prior to the rule of Spaniards.

Filipino Names - history

This is another great site by Hector Santos. It explains some of the naming practices of the peoples of the Philippines. It aslo discusses the influence, by the Spanish and Christianity, on Filipino names.

An interesting side discussion is how naming was, at one point, regulated by the government. Specifically, from 1849 - late 1880's. This law was known as The Catalogo Alfabetico de Apellidos

It lists many truly Filipino names, claiming over 2500 names.

Brief Look at Ancient History

This page is linked to Kenneth Yerro Ilio's main site - Philippine History 101

Although very restrictive in its contents, it is still worth the visit. It contains two exhibits that were found in the Philippines, currently in the Fields Museum, Chicago, Illinois, United States. One is a gold diety statue, dating back to 1000 CE (AD), the other a copper pot dating back to the 15th century. In addition, it shows several antique baskets, also from the Philippines.

Philippine Pre-History page

Short page of information on the Malayo-Polynesian peoples of early Philippines. It appears to have been written by Paul Kekai Manansala. The paper postulates that these peoples inhabited the islands as early as 7000 BCE (Before Common Era, aka BC).
