Noble Families of Hungary

as of 1755

- -- -

In the years of 1754 and 1755, the Hungarian government took a census of all families claiming nobility in the entire Hungarian empire. The families were asked to supply documents to prove their legitimacy as nobles. Janos Illessy compiled a book, entitled "Census of the Hungarian nobility, 1754-1755," that lists every family able to prove themselves noble. This database is a partial list of those families. Both the book and database are organized alphabetically by county, and then by surname. Also included in the book is some background information on the census. This book is available on microfilm through the LDS Family History Library. It is item two on film #924458.
In the summer of 2007, a fellow researcher brought the following to my attention: "The 1754-55 census was carried out by the Austrian Habsburgs with specific anti-Hungarian motives. The majority of the Hungarian nobility boycotted the Habsburg efforts. Therefore, the census is at best 8.4% accurate." It is wise to keep this assertion in mind when using the census for research.

Please select a county below to begin your search. The data is organized by county, and then alphabetically by surname. Further information can be obtained once the family's county of residence is determined. Remember, this is only a partial transcription of Janos Illessy's book. I apologize for any missing data.
