He was the Captain on the Nostromo. He was brave and always did exactly what the company said. When Ripley objected to what ash was doing Dallas stood by Ash because "Ash is in charge of those matters" not knowing that Ash was on a mission to capture the creature. He volunteered to corner and kill the alien in the vent system of the ship and was killed in the process. Leaving Ripley in charge.
