CHARLES COSPER On Class Photo Signatures

One of my favorite spots on your web site is the one with the signatures from Anita's 6th. grade class. I keep coming back to it...and each time with a chuckle. This page is not just a picture of faces, like most of the others...it is a snapshot of personalities, and like snowflakes (as we learned at Mills)..."No two are the same." I don't know about the rest of you, but several things stand out to me when I look at the signatures: 1. Each signature is legible (whether printed or script)...no "executive scrawl" here!! 2. The signatures reflected not only how some "were" seen (e.g. Mike Byrd the Mouse) but also, how some "wished " to be seen (e.g. William Donald Jacobs...instead of Billy Jacobs). 3. Finally, believe it or not, I actually remember signing my name, even though it has been only a few years ago since Anita sent me the "signatures." First, I printed my name because my handwriting was terrible at that time...and some would argue "still is." Second, I drew the "hawk in a circle" above my name because it was a symbol of one of my favorite comic heroes "Blackhawk." Third, I also drew the horse, "Rambler" at someone's request. And finally, I was the one who altered the wording of "Billy Ball The Great" to read "Bald" instead of "Ball." I can still remember kids laughing when I did that. Billy (now deceased) was a close friend who remembered me delivering papers and who corrosponded with me up to the time of his death. Incidently, I've always kidded ONLY my friends.

On Feeding Memories, Photos and Buses Click for full-size bus photo

I have tons of memories...I'll feed them to you in digestible bites; I also have a picture of Verne Speirs (our Mills principal)...from about 1947; he has been dead for several years but by some sleuthing, I located his surviving wife in Medford and sent her a couple of copies for her and her children...one was born AFTER the picture was taken. Mr Speirs was from Canada, I don't know if you knew that. He was also a deacon in the Nazarene Church which I attended along with Don Dexter and a few other kids from Mills. The picture shows him, the minister, and a bus driver standing in fron of a school bus...barely visible IN the bus are Don Dexter, Duane Day, several girls whom I have forgotten....and , of course, me. Would you like to have a copy? I don't know where you would place it in the group of pics...so far.

I'm sending the pictures tomorrow...four of them. You can keep the prints. I'm sure Tom will be happy to see them because he and I were in the same class for the 5th. and 7th. grades. Coincidently, he is in the very same position in both pictures...front row, third from the left. The picture of Miss Haldeman's class is rather dark; maybe someone else has a better print. If my memory is correct, this is a copy of a print sent to me by Clara Cabella. Miss Haldeman who taught art, geography, and history was one of my favorite teachers; I still remember all the capitals of the countries and states she taught us. She had travelled around the world and shared many of her experiences with us.
Incidently, Richard was not exaggerating one iota about the fierce music teacher, Miss Priest. She left quite an impression on me (which I can now narrow down to the 5th. grade, thanks to the pictures I have seen).
Bobby Joe Lewis doesn't remember ME but I certainly remember HIM...AND...MISS PRIEST. Here's what happened: we were singing a song which went "Bartholomew was a good little boy, Bartholomew's hat was his pride and joy; while he was walking along one day, the King came by the way." As the story went, everyone was supposed to remove their hats when the king passed...or face execution. By some magical means, Bartholomew could not remove his hat because one would reappear every time he tried to doff his hat. I decided it would be funny if Bobby and I went through the motions of removing our hats when we came to the chorus...acting it out, so to speak; everyone in class was giggling when we did that. But instead of telling us to stop, Miss Priest sneaked up behind us and cracked our heads together...I don't know about Lewis, but I had a knot on my head.
My memory is obviously very selective; I don't seem to recognize many people in the pictures you have posted so far...either faces or names. Sorry I couldn't help you more.
