Richard's Mills School Memories: Like Charles, I remember the pots (marbles) games we used to play. I was always catching hell for having dirty knees on my pants. And I wasn't that great at marbles. I shot butterfingers. I remember that Jimmy Shearer was real good. When I was in school briefly in Lodi, California, (1942-43) I remember playing with bottle caps from glass milk quarts. You had to soak them and press them and throw them in a special way. The object was to make your cap land on other caps....or something like that. I wasn't very good at that either.
I think I remember best seventh grade and Mrs. Walker, a strict teacher but a very good teacher. I sat near the back of the first row (by the widows). Dena sat in front of me and Ron Larson sat behind me. Dena's birthday is March 29th, mine is March 25th, and Ron's is in December. We are all Aries and that's a fire sign. I was forced to really apply myself academically because front and back got better grades than I did. It was a very good year, for me.
I remember going to the gym as a group (was it seventh grade) and feeling the power for the first time of a united group of people. I don't remember the cheer leaders, or if we even had them. But we nearly knocked the walls out of the gym cheering for our team. Must have been basketball.
I remember 5th grade with Mrs. Nitzel (another very good and strict teacher, she had red hair). I got mixed up and went home (three blocks away) for lunch at recess. My mother was surprised and I felt humiliated when she made me go back to school. Of course, I had to walk into a classroom where all of the students seemed to be waiting for me to come in and explain where I'd been. RLP

(Editor's NOTE:) These are Richard's additional comments, and in this one, he asked about them "triggering" my thoughts/rememberances. They sure do and I hope that other Mills and KUHS classmates have the same experience!!

Did any of my memories trigger some thoughts/rememberances of your own? I also remember a gang of guys, I don't remember what grade we were in, getting Dale Reynolds on the play ground and pantsing him. Mob rule. He was fighting but it was no use against a gang. I think I was part of it. I think I wanted to be in the group doing the pantsing. Not getting pantsed. In high school I once had the levi tag ripped from my pants. I remember Dale Reynolds always wore sweaters instead of shirts. RLP
