Tomahawk Rover Crew
Competition Camp Sept 2002
Tomahawks At
Gilwell Park Dec 2002
Who are the Tomahawks? The
Tomahawk Rover Crew are the senior section of the 1st Lancashire Mohawk Scout
Group. Our crew consists of a Rover Leader and Assistant RL, a quartermaster,
treasurer Rovers and Rover Squires.
What is Rovering? The function of Rovering is to open
the gateway of life, and to teach young people to walk the road, to help them
over the awkward path during which they have to learn to apply their Scouting
ideals that enshrine eternal values in a less than perfect world. Learning
using the methods taught by Baden Powell in the early days of Scouting such as
camping, hiking, pioneering, not forgetting Charity events to make them better
people!
How can I become a Rover?
Starting as a squire (aged 16 +), following the footsteps of
Rovers and learning from their experiences and with help of your sponsor you can
become a fully fledged Rover Scout.
Where we meet and What we do!!! Every
Monday night from 8.30pm - 10.30pm we meet at Heaton Park Methodist
Church. Our Crew nights vary from week to week. one week we have a sports
night, another could be a topical debate, but we always have time to discuss and
plan crew activities and training around a table drinking tea! Every month we
have a night out, be it Lazer quest and bowling or just a trip down to the local
pub.
Charity Events Over the past
few years we have taken part in various fundraising activities. In 1998 we
did a 54 mile trans Pennine Hike and raised £800 for The British Kidney patients
Association. In 2000 we Raised £2000 for The Emma Berman Dolphin
appeal by Hiking the National 3 peaks. Last year we cycled from Manchester
to Brown sea Island covering a total of 260miles in 3 days and Raised £700 for
Manchester Children's Hospitals. We are thinking of another challenge
for a worthy cause in the near future.
Winter Projects and the challenge
Trophy. Every year all the Rover crews are given 3 projects to
complete during the winter months. This year one of the projects was
to develop a web page (What you now see) to advertise Rovering.
Another was to produce a Scouting video or sketch which will
be shown at the Rover reunion in February. The Last Project was to visit 3
places of Scouting interest and to camp at least 10 feet off the ground at one
of them. We visited Brown sea Island (B.P.s first Scout Camp), Visited
Arrowe Park (1st Rover Reunion) and finally Gilwell Park (home of the Scout
Association) where we built a platform and spent the night 25 feet high in the
air.
When a Rover Crew Challenges the Holders of the Challenge
Trophy to a Scouting task. The trophy is up for grabs. We have held
the trophy since 1999, In this time we have had challenges from several
different Crews, including A outdoor cooking competition, A Karaoke
Competition and a mental challenge (trivial pursuit). We are hoping we
will get a new challenge in the near future.
