BLOUNT COUNTY TENNESSEE

Blount County is located in East Tennessee and was formed July 11, 1795. It was created from portions of Knox and Jefferson Counties and had Maryville as the county seat. It was accepted into the union on June 1, 1796. The county was named after William Blount, the govenor of Tennessee. It is bordered by Knox, Sevier, Loudon counties in Tennessee and Haywood and Swain counties in North Carolina.

Some boundaries of Blount County were altered by some early events as some lands in the south were cut off for Monroe County. In 1870 an entire Western District was taken to form Loudon County (with parts of other counties) and in 1828 the entire 16th District and parts of the 15th, 17th, and 18th Districts were taken into the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.
