AND SO: ON

And So On

And so: On  Reprise Records (RS 6448) 1971

Met Her On A Plane (3:00)  All Night show (3:00)  All My Love's Laughter (4:05)  Highpockets (5:25)  Marionette (2:32)  Laspitch (6:02)  One Lady (3:30)  If Ships Were Made To Sail (2:15)  Pocketful Of Keys (4:01)  See You Then (4:58)

The times weren't listed on this album, so all times are from what I penned in on the sleeve at the time, so that I could make a real good 8-track!
My favorites on this one were Highpockets, Marionette
(which I later learned had another verse that wasn't recorded for this album
but was recorded by Art Garfunkel.) and See You Then.  My copy of this album is completely worn out.  It has scratches on it from when my kids were small and my wife wasn't paying quite enough attention to them as she should have.  So I try to make a good cassette of it and not play the album itself.  It's worth it.

Met Her On A Plane

Met her on a plane
I had forgotten I was made of glass
I watched the cars and crows and cities pass you know
I watched the sun til I was blind now
I tried to drive her from my mind now
But I kept seeing her and I disappearing in the scenery
I was humming mmm mmm
Humming inside
Mmm mmm humming
I was humming inside

She told me of her pain
She did not know that I was hearing her
She did not know that I was nearing her
You know the sun it did remain now
And from the glaciers to the plains now
Her eyes burned bluer then the skies that still exist over Nevada
I was humming
Humming inside
Hmm hmm humming
I was humming inside

All Night Show

Uh uh baby don't you touch that dial
I can prob'ly make it worth your while
I got something that'll fit your style
In my re-found hit-bound top-sound file
Hey you know I'm waitin on the hot line
Yes you know I'm gonna make you feel fine
Yes you know your mind will roll on
It's the big bright black and white ass tight, outa-site all right and every night all night show
Woa it's the all night show

Hey all you cops in your cars
All you dudes in the bars
And so on........
Hey all you midnight blondes
I'm gonna rock you til dawn
We'll go on and go on
Go on and go on

You're up early this evening so you don't need rest
You've got no oral fixation and you don't need to be blessed
The civil defense already gave you your test
So now I'm gonna give you ten of my best
Hey now
You know we're all gonna feel swell
Yes you know we're all gonna get well
Just put your hand on the radio
Cause it's the big bright black and white ass tight outa site all right and every nite all night show
Woa it's the all night show

All My Love's Laughter

All my love's laughter
And all my love's faces
She comes in the morning
Her cloak in her arms
She's following after
The king of all places
And your tenderest warning
Would bruise all her charms

But don't lose your heart to
That beautiful sinner
She walks without shining
Her light now
She stands in the shade
And the sun is there in her
But you'll never know til it's night

All my loves' softness
And all my love's graces
She carries all things
In her tiny white glove
She hides all her lostness
In satins and laces
And everyone says
Everyone says
She's searching for sweet love

But don't try to hold on
To Satan's proud lady
She stands with her flock
All alone on the hill
Her stockings are hung yeah
And her eyes are so shady
She's winning
And you
Never will

Highpockets

With your blue Levi's turned up instead of under
And your striped blue t-shirt washed instead of ironed
Oh you're squinting cause you left your glasses
Lying in on of your classes
Highpockets
Why do you hold your books against your chest
Why don't you ever seem to do your best

Don't you want to be beautiful
Ah yes
Don't you want to make money someday
You're throwing your future away
Highpockets

With your clipboard waving flags of tattered papers
And your one short pencil chewed almost in two
Oh your green stained knees and combat boot shoes
Play newspapers full of good news
Highpockets
Why don't you get a grip upon yourself
Why don't you act like everybody else

Don't you wanna be likable
Ah yes
Don't you want to make money someday
You're thowing your future away
Hightpockets

A boy with your ability
Should already know what he wants to be
But you'll dream about flying and average a C
And go off to war

With your runny nose all red from too much blowing
And your messy homework paper just half done
Oh oh you dropped your lunch bag in the gutter
Ketchup in the peanut butter
Highpockets
Why don't you get a zip up notebook boy
And don't treat the family baby like a toy

Don't you want t o be beautiful
Ah yes
Don't you want to amke money someday
You're thowing your future away
Highpockets
Why don't you go on home

Marionette

Marionette your dress is all wet
Did someone leave you outside in the rain
Or is it the pain
That makes all the puppet tears roll down your cheek
Or does the rood leak

Marionette how could you forget
I told you your bright shining varnish would peel
And how does it feel
With the bright rouge all faded and the smile almost cracked
Now that you've come back

Almost too late
For my hands are much stiffer than they were when first I painted your eyes

Marionette no you're not finished yet
I'll mend you and make you like new
Paint your eyes blue
And make you as young as I was myself
And there on the shelf
You'll sit til the puppet man comes
Around again

Laspitch

Laspitch has the money in this town
He owns the local grocery store
And has controlling interest at the bank
He drives a special limousine
With 38 cent ethyl in the tank
But Laspitch loves the preacher's daughter
Whispered in the Powder Puff Salon
Laspitch loves the preacher's daughter
Went to Tucson
Got a drunk on
Broke out every window in the place
But no one ever says it to his face

Laspitch has the money in this town
His nephew runs the barbershop
Laspitch runs his nephew like a clock
But clocks don't ask the time of day
And everything is steady as old Laspitch goes
But Laspitch loves the preacher's daughter
Scrawled above the pool room urinal
Laspitch loves the preacher's daughter
Went to Newhall
Hit a brick wall
Someone said the wreckage smelled like beer
But no one said it where Laspitch could hear

Meanwhile at the PTA
His wife is giving the door prize away
And Mrs. Kuruthers turns to Mrs. Fields
Poor thing, I guess she doesn't know
But Mrs. Laspitch overhears and smiles
Yes she smiles
All the way home

And everything is steady as old Laspitch goes
Cause Mrs. Laspitch loves the preacher
That's the thing that no one really knows
Mrs. Laspitch loves the preacher
Loves him badly
Need him madly
Clandestine meetings in the baptistry
And Mr. Laspitch simply pays the fee
The fee

One Lady

One morining
Looking at mirror eyes
I came to realize
The emptiness in bein free
The loneliness that shows me

One reason
That's all I need to live
Tell me it's yours to give that
One sweet special smile
I wanna be with
Just one lady
Just one lady for a while

One woman
Could lmake a difference now
If you could reach me somehow
A man deserves a trial
I wanna be with
Just one lady
Just one lady for a while

If Ships Were Made To Sail

If ships were made to sail
Out through the star clouds
There'd be a world somewhere
All green and fair
If I could go
To Alpha Centauri
Then I would be
A livin there

If I could fall up the long night reach to time gone
And touch infinity
I'd find a forest hill
And clean fresh air
If I coudl go
To Alpha Centauri
Then I would be
A livin there

Pocketful Of Keys

He has one that locks the office
And there's one that starts the big fine car
And it finds it's way home
He has two that fit the front door locks
And one that fits the mailbox
But inside there's just a spider and he scuttles to the corner with his mysteries
Cause he's frighened by the jangle of his pocket full of keys

He has one ta fit the cashbox
And one unlocks the liquor bar
And it finds its way down
He has one that fits the study door
And one unlocks the desk drawer
And he touches all his letters and he sorts them all according to his memories
To the icy clank and tinkle of his pocket full of keys

There's a padlock on the garden gate
There's a padlock on the hunting lodge
There's a padlock on the his and her garage
Amen
He was a somber man
Not inclined to telling her his mind

And there's one to lock the pain up
And one to keep the hot tears in
But they find their way out
He has one that locks the best gin up
And one that keeps his chip up
And in shaky situations he has learned a way by which he even locks his knees
And he holds himself together with his pocketful of keys
And he holds himself together
With his keys

See You Then

Part of a dream
Still hurtin
Hurtin in my left eye
Now I know I'm gonna have to
Make a last try
And If  I'm back
In California
Before snow fly
I'll see ya then

I've got no plans
Outside of livin
Livin till tomorrow
I'm gonna run with every minute
I can borrow
And when I've paid back
All my dues
And loose this sorrow
I'll see you then
Oh yes I'll see you then babe
Cause I am

Lost
Yes I am lost
I'm lost lost lost
Forever
Beyond your help and tender kindness
I cannot see
Beyond my cherished blindness

You must admit
We reallly
Really had a nice ride
There was mornin after mornin
Before love died
And if I never
Kiss your lips again
On this side
I'll see you then
Oh yes I'll see you then babe
See you........
