Voices
was released in 1979. It starred Michael
Ontkean, Amy
Irving and Alex
Rocco. The story is about a deaf
girl, played by Irving,
who wants to be a dancer and how she meets Drew (Ontkean),
a singer in a local band with stars in his eyes, who is from a tough local
family; motherless, of course. Rocco
plays his father. The plot is very thin. The movie
is much too long to keep your attention, with parts that just seem to drag
on forever. But the music
is great! Mr. Webb wrote
all the music but for 3 tracks performed by Tom
Petty, and Willie
Nelson. The Children's
Song, a Mr. Webb original, is performed by
Andrew and David Williams. Drew's
vocal talent is awesome, thanks to the dubbing of Burton
Cummings on I
Will Always Wait For You and On
A Stage. On
A Stage got considerable air play when the
movie was released, but I don't think it was much of a hit, despite
being a powerful, moving song. You might have heard "Rosemarie's
Theme" and not even known it. The
label lists it's time as 1:03, but it is really exactly 1 minute and has
been used since the movie came out as background music for many a live
60 second radio commercial. I recall that it was even used on
the Howard Stern Show
at one time. That's no surprise though, since Fred
Norris, who controls this on the Stern
show, knows good music when he hears it. I don't believe this
album is available anywhere in any format. Too bad. It
ranks right up there with some of Mr. Webb's great works.
