Notes for Loepold WHARTON-RUBENSTEIN

This story is anecdotal with no way to prove or disprove it so it is
submitted here for what it is worth. My Aunt Marie told it to me many
times as she had it from her grandmother.

When George III was King of England and his son, who was to become
George IV, was
Prince of Wales, he fell in love with a catholic widow named Maria
Fitz Herbert. At that
time there was a prohibition against any Catholic being King or Queen
of England.
Marriage to Lady Fitz Herbert would have disqualified George from
succeeding his
father. In defiance of his father he married her any way. The King
refused to recognize
the marriage and therefore it was invalid but Maria FitzHerbert lived
with George(IV) in
Buckingham Palace as his wife after being assured by her confessor
that she was married
by God. This marriage produced two children , a boy and a girl.
Later George was forced to marry his cousin Princess Carolyn, who he
detested.
They never lived together and she maintained her own Court. When
George became King
she was even prevented from attending the coronation.
Since the children could not be in succession, they were never
publicly
recognized since George did not want to ever produce a cause for a
pretender that might
develop into a civil war or disturbance. The country was not too far
past Bonnie Prince
Charlie. The children were supposedly given into the care of Lord
Wharton to raise as his
own at birth. They were told of their parentage and both their mother
and father visited
them as they grew.
The boy could not get along with Lord Wharton and ran away to sea at
age 16. He
was never heard from again. The girl was sent to the court of Queen
Victoria as a Lady in
Waiting, where she fell in love with a secretary to the Queen a young
good-looking
Jewish boy that spoke nine languages. Due to opposition because of
religion, the couple
eloped to France where he found employment in the Court of Napoleon
III. The daughter
of George IV(wife) became a close confidant of the Empress Eugenie.
They had two
children born in Paris named Leo and Eugenia in 1870 and 1872. When
Napoleon III was
overthrown in 1872, they fled in the company of the Empress.
Eventually coming to the
US.
The son born in France was my Aunt’s father Leo Rubenstein. The
daughter
Eugenia married a NY banker Whitney Buck (A member of the Whitney
family)
The problem with this story is the time line. There is almost 100
years between
the marriage of Lady FitzHerbert to George IV (1785) until the birth
of their daughters
children in 1870-1872. Too LONG. What I think MAY be true is that the
daughter of
LFH and GIV was married off to Lord Wharton and their children are the
ones talked
about.
Corroborating evidence. Until the 1930’s the marriage of LFH and
George IV was
never recognized in History. LFH left some paper in the royal archives
that were to be
opened 100 years after her death. In the 1930’s Eugenia Buck went to
England to try to
get those papers which were supposed to contain the marriage
certificates, and birth
certificates of the children and the diaries of LFH. She was able to
get them opened and
looked at by the Royal family but after that they were resealed,
however after that time
History has recognized the marriage of George IV to LFH. No children
were recognized.
There is a plaque in Windsor Castle Chapel ( confirmed by my own
eyes) to Lord
Wharton “for remarkable services to his King”.
Leo Ruberstein (AKA Wharton) was an early film director and on the
net you can
find his bio as Leo Wharton born Paris 1870.
That’s the story. What do you think? True or False or maybe both.

but was married by proxie. When George became King she was even
