Four Trail Climbing

Students in all grade levels
receive a six week unit of instruction in Project Adventure. Project Adventure
is a component of the physical education curriculum.
The unit is delivered in two
phases of three weeks in length. During phase 1, the students are
exposed to a variety of games and problem solving activities. (
Initiatives )
A an example of a popular initiative is nitro crossing.
In addition, students are provided an opportunity to get involved in trust
developing activities. An example of a trust activity is the one
on one trust fall with a partner. Also during this phase, students
learn and review the procedure to tie their own climbing harness. (front
view, rear view, square
knot with lock knots) Lastly, they are instructed on the technique
and use of the Australian belay used during trail
climbing on our wall.
During phase 2 the students
are provided opportunities to be challenged by the climbing elements
listed below. Students
are challenged with different levels of difficulty based on their individual
needs and comfort level. An example may be climbing and/or jumping blindfolded.
Grade 6 - Wall
climbing (Australian Belay), Centipede,
Fireman's Ladder, Cargo Net
Grade 7 - All Grade
6 challenges plus, Swinging Beam and the High
Multi vine
Grade 8 - All Grade
6 and 7 challenges plus, Two-line walk, Firecracker
ladder, Halligan's
Trail
and Trapeze Jumping (Vertical & Horizontal
Bars)
Helmets and Harness
