Settlement of the Middle Colonies

- New Netherland (Dutch)
        o 1609: Hudson sails up the Hudson River on the Half Moon
                § leads to an establishment of a fur trade with the Iroquois
        o 1621: Dutch get permission to colonize New Netherland
        o 1625: Peter Minuit buys Manhattan from the Indians for 25 dollars and names it New Amsterdam
        o Fur trade becomes profitable, but people do not settle there
                § Leads to opening of its doors to a variety of many people
                        · Colonies were religiously tolerant and friendly with Indians
        o 1664: English takeover and rename the colony New York and give part of the land to other and make it New Jersey
- Pennsylvania (Quakers)
        o Given to William Penn as a payment to a debt owed by the King of England
        o Beliefs of the Quakers
                § God’s inner light burned inside everyone
                § Rejected formal ministers, war and military duties
        o Every male settler was guaranteed 50 acres of land and the right to vote
        o Quaker government called for a representative assembly and the freedom of religion
                § Led to friendly relations with Indians
        o Due to lack of settlers and a need for profit, Penn invites others to come.
                § Most of the people that come are German and are known as the Pennsylvania Dutch
