England and Its Colonies

- Mercantilism: economic system in which nations to increase their power and wealth by obtaining large amounts of gold and silver and establishing a favorable balance of trade
        o Colonies played an important part in this system due to their supply of raw materials and serving as a market for finished goods made by the mother country

- Navigation Acts 1651
        o Made by English Parliament as a reaction to colonies trading with nations other than England
        o States that colonies can only conduct trade with English or trade goods that are on English ships

- After 1688, England adopts a policy of salutary neglect toward the colonies
        o Salutary Neglect: English policy of relaxing the enforcement of regulations in its colonies
