REALITY IS NON–LOCAL? What does that mean, you ask?

IF WE CAN understand Bell’s Theorem, we can use it as a
jumping–off point to understanding the concept of non–locality.
                 Let’s have a look.

THE TITLE of this page refers to a theorem of physics that
was constructed by a famous scientist; the late John Bell. To
approach Bell’s Theorem, we may find it useful to backtrack just a
bit and first define what it means when we say that reality is “local”.
It’s not too difficult to explain the concept of locality, and I’ll use
some great quotes from physicist Nick Herbert’s book Quantum
Reality to help. Here is the first quote from Dr. Herbert:

“THE ESSENCE OF A LOCAL INTERACTION is direct
contact – as basic as a punch in the nose. Body ‘A’ affects
Body ‘B’ locally when it either touches ‘B’ or touches
something else that touches ‘B’. A gear train is a typical local
mechanism. Motion passes from one gear wheel to another
in an unbroken chain. Break the chain by taking out a single
gear and the movement cannot continue. Without something
there to mediate it, a local interaction cannot cross a gap.”
“On the other hand, the essence of non–locality is
                      unmediated action–at–a–distance. A non–local interaction
jumps from Body ‘A’ to Body ‘B’ without touching anything
                      in between.”

LOCALITY INSISTS that only mediated actions are “real”, and
that unmediated actions are not possible. To attempt to explain
mediated “action–at–a–distance”, locality relies on the concept of a
“force field”, usually explained as an exchange of “particles”, to
account for interactions between objects that are separated within
Space–Time. As an example of this principle, gravitational
attraction between Earth and Moon is imagined as being mediated
by “graviton particles” within a “gravity field”. Both particle and
field are “quantum stuff”, there being no sharp distinction between
either one. Though this standard physicist’s formulation is relatively
inelegant, it has certainly proven useful.

NICK HERBERT AGAIN, from an interview in High
                      Frontiers magazine;

“WE HAVE AN ADDITIONAL RESTRICTION on
locality and that’s that nothing can go faster than the speed of
light . . . and the reason for this is not just some arbitrary
whim of physicists, as if the speed of light were like a speed
limit on an interstate highway . . . no particle can travel faster
than 186,000 miles per second because there’s some kind of
cosmic cop that's going to pull it over . . . It’s not that way at
                      all.”
“There’s a more important reason for the light speed
limit. That reason is to keep the present
“uncontaminated”. If things could go faster than light,
the present would be contaminated by all sorts of things
from the future and the past! . . . ”
“In some sense, the speed of light is a finely sharpened
wedge that keeps the future and the past apart, and the point
of that wedge is the present. If things would go faster than
light, that wedge would disappear. If reality were non–local,
“Time Machines” would be possible, and all sorts of crazy
things would happen. So, that’s one reason for the restriction
in physics of the light speed limit; that’s locality’s restriction.”

                      “BELL’S THEOREM says that reality is non–local . . .”

                      “SO, HERE’S THIS GUY, John Bell . . . a physicist in
                      Switzerland, and he’s saying that reality is non–local . . . he’s
saying that one event can affect the other, even before the
                      first event decides to happen!”

“ONCE YOU HAVE faster–than–light effects happening,
not only is this sort of thing possible, it has to happen! Once
you exceed the speed of light, you’re going to have events in
the future affecting things in the past! Physics guarantees
                      that!”

SOUND THE TRUMPETS and wildly wave the banners, because
there is a means, a technique, a process for transmitting faster than
light. Bell’s Theorem proved this fact. Although people with an
advanced psychic and/or spiritual viewpoint may accept this
revelation quite easily, the stumbling point for rapid and universal
acceptance of this new and/or old reality is that the mechanism for
faster–than–light transactions is not readily apparent within the four
                 dimensional perspective of Space–Time.

                      HERE IS ONE final extract from Nick Herbert;

“THERE ARE LOTS OF THINGS that are being kept from
the public as far as the subjects of physics and consciousness
                      are concerned . . . Bell’s Theorem was proved in 1964, and
it is still not taught in physics classes, and you don’t hear it on
your science news programs. A theorem is a proof, and no
one’s found a flaw in this theorem. It’s such a simple proof
that a high school kid can understand it . . . so physicists can
understand it. They have various ways of trying to ignore it,
but it can’t be refuted because it’s so simple.”
“A non–local interaction links up one location with another
without crossing space, without decay, and without delay. A
non–local interaction is, in short, unmediated, unmitigated,
                      and immediate.”

UNTIL BELL’S THEOREM, the “Church of Big Science”
confidently led Humanity to continue believing that the Universe
was local. Now, Science knows better, even though you’ll still hear
the old lie being told. The terrific truth is that an information “signal,”
or a connection of some type, does indeed travel faster than light,
so don’t let anyone sell you the old superstition that it doesn’t!
Bell’s Theorem has illuminated the real reality . . . for all who have
                 eyes to see it.
There is no way to remove the stake that has been driven into
the heart of Locality. Although making use of the thus–far infallible
Quantum Theory, Bell’s Theorem does not rest on the axioms of
Quantum Theory alone. If Quantum Theory were superseded
tomorrow by a superior set of speculations, that new theory would
still have to account for the Universe’s non–locality. Non–locality
is a fundamental part of the Universe, not a derivative of a
transitory scientific method for thinking about reality.

                 NON–LOCALITY is the golden truth, . . .

THIS IS NOT SOMETHING that is going to be overturned or just
go away. To the befuddlement of the “flat Earth” types, who simply
choose not to admit the truth, the curious “reality dissidents”, like
me, have been right all along. We have finally confirmed, once and
for all, the way the real world works, and that certainly feels good
                 to say!

But, . . . predictably . . . here comes the card from the bottom of
the deck; most of Big Science still irrationally clings to the
demolished, obsolete belief structure of locality.

Comically, scandalously, the news has actually been minimized
and concealed. They would rather deny reality itself (sic), than
accept the facts. Those members of the public who have been
informed, find it difficult/impossible to change their minds.
As a Species, humans are at another fulcrum point of Evolution.
The tiniest movements at this juncture will extrapolate into
enormous future consequences. A new imperative is being offered
                 by the Universe!

IN ORDER TO ADAPT, we adopt the most likely, and the most
                 promising explanation for non–locality:

QUITE SIMPLY, we assume that there are more than
four dimensions in the Universe! The faster–than–light
transactions occur in those higher “bonus dimensions.”
Superstring Theory (the latest “theory of everything”
advanced by the avant garde of the international physics
community) has to have at least part of the right idea.
Faster–than–light transactions are the status quo within those
higher dimensions which supersting theory demands.

IF YOU DESIRE a more complete, detailed description about
Bell’s Theorem and the current “new physics”, read Nick Herbert’s
                 Quantum Reality, for starters.

TWO OTHER worthwhile books on the topic are The Dancing
Wu Li Masters by Gary Zukav & The Tao of Physics by Fritjof
                 Capra.
