How to hotsync the Palm III with iMac

You must have an early iMac (Rev. A or B), which has a functional IR port. The newer iMacs disabled this lovely feature. See, sometime it pays off to be an early user.

Well, I suppose you have an IR-capable iMac. Then, you must have an IR-capable Palm. Palm III and Palm IIIx are both IR-capable, I tested them. Palm Vs and Palm VIIs should have the ability too, however, I don't have experience on them.

The important part is the software. If you are using Palm OS 3.1, you must download the IR support files from Palm Support. If you are using the PalmOS 3.3, you don't need such files, because the IR supports are build-in in PalmOS 3.3.

I strongly recommend the PalmOS 3.3. First, it is free, you can download it from the Palm website. Second, it is more stable then the PalmOS 3.1. Third, it has more nifty features, IR-hotsync is one of them. Fourth, it is much faster than PalmOS 3.1 when hotsyncing. For detail information of PalmOS 3.3, please check the Palm Upagrade page.

On the iMac side, you have all the software you need already. Sometimes maybe the IR extensions are not installed on your machine. Then find out the MacOS CD-ROM, do a custom installation, check all the IR-related extensions. If you are using MacOS 8.5 or 8.6, they are IrDA Tool, IrDALib, and IrLanScanner PPC. Install these three extensions, you iMac now is ready for IR-hotsyncing with your Palm. From the setup menu of the Palm Desktop software, choose the IR port for hotsync and begin Rock and Roll. Good luck.
