The memopad is a very convenient application for the Palm. However, it has a fatal limit: it can only holds 4K bytes per documents, that means you can only store 4K characters in a single memo. That's very unconvenient if you want to write or view longer articles on a Palm.

So, for more versatile text reading and editing, there comes the Doc format. It is the standard text viewing and editing format for the Palm. So many applications use the doc format, you can check it out at PalmGear.

The application I am using on my PalmIII is SmartDoc, you can also find it in PalmGear. The doc format documents existing on the desktop as pdb files. After hotsyncing the Palm, the doc pdb files will appear in the Backup folder inside your palm folder. Using an application called MakeDocDD, you can convert the pdb doc files into text file, or you can convert the text files into the doc prc file. After converting a text file into a prc file, you can simply install it onto your Palm as other prc files.

There are another excellent file converters for Macintosh. I am also using a file converter called Palm File Converter, other than convert between doc and text files, it can also convert between the JFile database pdb and the csv format.
