FOMORII (CAN) | ||
The Curse of Macha 2004 Northern Horde Records By: Naberius I'll have to admit, the main reason I picked this up is because I am a devoted follower of all of the members of Fomorii's other bands, Geimhre and Grim Winter, and I'm very glad I did. I wasn't expecting this at all. This is pure Celtic Pagan Metal. Most of the tracks are completely instrumental.and the first one, "Sidhe," sounds like it's right out of the Conan movies. In fact, only two of the five tracks even have vocals, being "Belathucadnos" and "Tech Duinn". For "Belathucadnos", Guerfaul of the mighty Geimhre takes over the vocals on, in my opinion, the demo's highlight track. Complete with chants and Vintrtrol's unique guitar style, this song, surprisingly, gets quite brutal, considering, at the end. The title track, "The Curse of Macha," is just truly a beautiful song. I don't care how "black metal" you are, it just is. "Tech Duinn" switches it up and puts W.H. Volk of Grim Winter on vocals and I think it's awesome how they give the two singers their own tracks. The two tracks sound so different but yet somehow compliment each other nicely. You can just kind of tell who wrote what, is what I'm trying to say, I guess. The closing track, "March of the King of Laoise," even brings in traditional Celtic instruments, including bagpipes, to complete the feel. If you're into bands that have a deep respect for their roots, you can't go wrong with Fomorii. This release makes me very proud of my own heritage. |
