This is not for the black metal purists. Ilvestgrol gives off a very "black n' roll" feeling with this demo. The music screams "sex, drugs, and black metal" with song titles such as "Obesity Perversion," "Fuck You Sodomy," and "Lick My Wounds." It kind of makes you want to take a shower after you listen to it because it makes you feel kind of dirty. The vocals are a cross between Nagash from early to mid Covenant and Abbath but the lyrics are sometimes funny and ridiculous; "Seduce me with your body, let me fuck you sodomy." I've also never heard the word "fuck" so many times on a black metal release. Yersina Pestis also either needs to turn down his vocals or back away from the mic a little. You have that constant "the mic is damn near in my mouth right now" sound to it. Like I said, the music is dirty and has that "black n' roll" feeling to it but the guitarist does have his moments. The standout track is the band's title track, "Ilvestgrol." This has the best riff on the demo about half-way through the song and at the end, as well. It's also the "purist" sounding one when it comes to black metal "standards." Stay clear from Ilvestgrol if you don't have an open mind. These are black metal "rockstars." Satyricon, these days, would love this demo and Nattefrost would be a fan of the song titles. This is an entertaining release, if nothing else, although, it seems to grow on me more and more with each listen...
