Time of the Wolves 2004 Winter Forest Records By: Naberius Going strictly on looks, you'd think that this was some odd, experimental, "hippy" black metal. Take a look at the logo and you'll know what I mean. Thankfully, that's not the case. Musically, this demo keeps the spirit of "classic" black metal alive. Take about every black metal album recorded from '92 to '94 and mix it all together. That is "Time of the Wolves." The vocals range from basic black, to drunken pub clean (think Finntrol), to a really, really, odd half black-half clean, punky bastard hyrbrid of a voice. "Land of Wolves" is a prime example of this. The whole song has kind of a "punk rock" flow to it, actually. It's not bad, it's just kind of odd. As is the whole demo. Of course, the best song on the demo, "Ending in the Lands of War," is only 1:45 in length. Actually, I take it back...this is rather odd and kind of experimental. However, they do a hell of a job in doing so while never leaving the black metal sound. At the beginning of "The Ancestral Way," I thought I was listening to GWAR. Interesting... |
