Interview conducted by Naberius with Joey (Guitar and Vocals) of Wolfenriz.

-Joey-

First off, for those who have yet to hear Wolfenriz, describe your music.

The most primitive and stripped down version of acoustic black metal.  Call it ugly, boring, raw; it's the simplest form of music I can think of.  Me and a guitar...very personal with low production.

What releases do you have out or have planned?

I just finished making my current album "SONGSABOUTWOLVESANDSTUFF."  I plan to make more releases.  Many more.  My next demo will not have so much of a theme like this one but I promise you it will be just as strange.

Who or what inspired you to make music like this?

In 1996, I had begun a project, now known in some small circles as DIARHETTICGUTFUK.  It was a cyber gore/grind project consisting of me and my PC.  Later, in 2004, I created a noisecore project, DICKSNOTBUTTCRUST, but at the end of the year, I became tired of making noisecore and the whole recording process.  Even though I was making this, black metal was still a very important part of my musical background. I was inspired to make this particular type of music when I came across Impaled Northern Moonforest, the most hateful and funny acoustic black metal band, started by Seth Putnam (Anal Cunt.)  It was the strangest thing I had ever heard.  Acoustic guitars, vocals, and knee-slapping instead of drums.  Very comical and something I like, anyway.  The stranger and more obscure the better.  It's something that doesn't fit the "mold."

Is what your doing meant to be a complete joke or does it actually have some seriousness in it somewhere?

I would find a little of both in my music.  Acoustic black metal is supposed to be a joke but I would consider my music...hmm..."dark humor."  Where acoustic black metal is supposed to be a poke at black metal and black metal bands and where some acoustic black metal bands play bad acoustic guitar and have kiddish, child-like ideas and vocals, my project is more like in the idea of a black metal band without the drums or electric guitars and the humor is in the lyrics.  I guess that would be my spin on things.

What other black metal bands do you listen to?

I do listen to a few black metal bands...a handful.  Old Mayhem,  the first few Burzum albums, old Immortal, Nargaroth, Graveland, Gorgoroth, Black Witchery, raw and underproduced stuff.  But I don't just listen to black metal.  I listen to all genres of music, as long as it's strange.

What are you going to say to all of those "kvlt" black metallers who will be angry with your music and say that you are making a mockery of everything that black metal is supposed to be?

That's not my intention and to take my half assed venting as some kind of art.  Now, if these people are going to get pissy about one person and think I'm making a mockery of black metal, you would think that these "true kvlt" black metallers would have thicker skin than that to let one person get to them.

Do you ever think that you would create a "real" black metal band or maybe add some more elements, like drums or distortion, to Wolfenriz??

As far as a "real" black metal band, I don't.  I wouldn't do that due to the fact that I hate doing takes (recording) for drums, bass, guitars, and vocals.  I like one shot recording.  Play the song and that's it, it's done.  But who knows.  I might add other elements of percussion, another guitarist, another singer, who knows.  I just don't like to keep the same sound...I don't like to keep a particular sound.  I may not add drums or distortion to my project but my sound won't stay the same.  Hmm...maybe a xylophone in a black metal band...who know?

Do you plan on continuing this as a real project or is this just more of a spur of the moment type thing?

I'm keeping this as a real project.  I have to put my PC, 4 track, and guitars to use somehow.

Just out of curiosity, do you have actual lyrics, or is it just incoherent screaming?

At the moment, I have no actual lyircs, just ranting and raving but, I am going to have real lyrics for a few songs, maybe.  I'm sure the incoherent screaming bit alone gets boring.

The floor is yours.  Any closing hails, curses, thoughts, or comments?

Hails to anyone and everyone that inspired me, this grimmest of all interviews, Mother Night, Mistress Moon,  heathens, barbarians, and most importantly, WOLVES, WOLVES, WOLVES!...HAILS, HAILS, HAILS!  Curse pretty black metal and the gothic stuff (who said black metal was supposed to be nice?) and name droppers ( I hate those people.)  As for thoughts, why do people assume turtles are slow?  Those fuckers are pretty quick.  Hmm, comments.  Don't follow the trend and always be diferent.  Snatch old lady's purses.  Check out my site for Wolfenriz.  Thanks for the interview...HAILS, HAILS, HAILS!
