Lupus in males
Although
uncommon in men, it does not differ in any major way from the pattern of lupus
in females. Lupus is nine times more common in females than males. If one looks
under the age of 12, the ratio is three girls to one boy. In the 60 year olds,
the ratio is something like three to one. In the mid-twenties to the
mid-thirties, the ratio of female to male approaches 30 to one!
The treatment of lupus in males is the same. Although hormonal
effects are important, there have been no clinical trials showing how perhaps
male hormonal treatment may be beneficial, but there may be future studies of
newer hormonal-related treatments in males with lupus.
