Can't Go On
written by: Bree
"You said you're leavin' me, and I understand

Although we've had some good times, lately you seem so sad

Don't try and say you don't love me, cuz I know that it just ain't true.

That's just your way of trying to say you don't know what to do."

Shane was shocked when his wife Emily said that she was moving out of their house, and was shocked even more when she said that she was considering a divorce. He knew things hadn't been the greatest between them as of late, there was a distance forming between them more and more, but.......Emily moving out? A divorce, for God's sake??? He'd had no idea things had gotten that bad!! He just wished that he could figure out.......he knew that Emily loves him(why else would she have married him?). so why was she doing this? He wasn't so sure that she knew why herself.

"When the times got tough, girl I let you down

Things got rough, I was not around

Should have been everything that you need,

Baby I pray that you'll come back to me."
Shane watched Emily as she went around their house, collecting up her things to pack up for the move. When she took a break to sit down for a few minutes in the living room and have something to drink, he decided to confront her about it.

"Emmie, why are you doing this? Things between us can't have become so bad that it's gotten to the point where our relationship is totally unsalvageable, can they? I mean, I know I've been kinda busy with the band lately, but-"

"Kinda busy?!? Shane, you've been way too busy with your precious band!!"

"Too busy? Yeah, I guess you're right. I mean, I come home as often as I can, but-"

"Shane, you never being home isn't the problem, although that's part of it."

"Ok, what is the problem, then?" He asked

"The problem is that you're so caught up with your career that you don't even know what's going on in your own wife's life!" She accused viciously

"Em, what are you talking about? I know what's going on in your life!!"

"Oh yeah?" She glared at him accusingly, and Shane felt as though he were on trial for murder. "Did you know that my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer?? Or that my sister and cousin are both extremely lucky to be alive because they were in a very bad car accident and spent damn near a month in the ICU?? Or that my grandmother died of a heart attack? Or that I miscarried our first child?" Shane just looked at her, utterly horrified when he realized that he hadn't known about any of what she'd just said. Good God, had he been that busy with Westlife?? "Let's face it Shane, Westlife is the most important thing in your life next to your family, and I'm just not a priority anymore. I mean, it's not that I don't wanna hear about the band, it's a major part of your life and I wanna hear about it cuz I wanna know what's going on in your life, but that's all you ever wanna talk about!! And the saddest part about it is that one of your bandmates has been there for me more than you ever have!" Shane's eyebrows shot up in surprise.

"Who?" He asked
"Kian. He's the one who was on the phone with me every day asking me what's going on with me, how I was holding up and if I needed to talk about anything. Trust me, I've given that poor boy an earful and a half about how fed up I am with you never giving a damn about me!! It's happened more than once too, you can ask him if you don't believe me. He'll tell you that I'm not lying. Ya know what, Shane? I've even considered leaving you for him since he so obviously cares about me a whole hell of a lot more than you do, and I'm your goddamn wife Shane, not his!! Has this conversation clarified my reasons for wanting a divorce at all?"

"Yeah, definitely." Shane responded

"Well then, I think I'll continue my packing now." Emily said, setting her glass down on the coffee table.

"I care for you more than you know

Should have spent more time doing the things that make love grow

Didn't ever mean to leave you alone,

Was too blind to see what I had at home.

Now I realize what I'd do for your love.

I can't go on without you in my life

I can't go on knowin' we haven't tried

You're the one that I want, the one that I need

Baby, please bring all your love back to me

When the times get tough I won't let you down

Seas get rough, I won't let you drown

I will be everything that you need

Baby, I pray that you'll come back to me."

Shane just sat there in the living room as Emily continued her packing, thinking about what she'd said. Had he really been that caught up with his job? He thought about it and admitted that he hadn't exactly been the best of listeners lately, but vowed to himself that he'd change on that point. Although he (obviously) didn't show it very well, he loved Emily more than anything in the world and would do anything to prove that to her-even if it meant leaving Westlife.

Eventually, Emily came back into the living room to start packing up her Precious Moments and angel figurines. She moved around the room totally and blatantly ignoring Shane, who was still sitting on the couch. She walked over to the fireplace to take her two favorite angel figurines off the mantle-and froze when her gaze rested on the wedding picture of her and Shane that rested between them. Shane watched her pick up the picture and touch the image of him almost lovingly, and he saw his chance. He walked up behind her and touched the image of her in the white wedding dress she'd worn.

"You looked so beautiful that day, Em-and still do!" He added hastily.

"Thanks."

"Do you remember how happy we were that day?" He asked, personally remembering all too well.

"Yeah, very." She said, with a slight smile playing on her lips.

"Do you think there's any chance that we can ever be that happy together again?" He asked, taking a half-step towards her and moving to put his arms around her waist, but she moved away from him and put the picture back in its place.

"No, I don't."

"Why?"

"I think we've already had that discussion, Shane."

"You're right, we have. You were also right then, I realize that now. I also realize how stupid and blind I was to treat you like that, to fail to be there for you at the times you needed me the most. I was very wrong, but I swear to you right now that I won't ever treat you like that again. I promise that I'll spent a lot more time listening to you, and I'll be there for you from now on. Can we please give us another try? Please?" He pleaded.

"No."

"Emily-"

"I'm sorry Shane, but I can't believe you. You've let me down and hurt me once and I'm not about to let it happen again. Goodbye, Shane." She turned to pick up her purse off the coffee table and then walked out the front door, letting it close behind her with a slam.

"Oh, I realize every time I fantasize

Being back in your arms, holding you close at night

Baby understand, I wanna be the man who'll take care of you

I'll be there for you, I won't ever hurt you again."

Shane laid awake in bed that night, wishing that Emily were there so that he could hold her, kiss her, and then undress her and tenderly make sweet love to her all night long. He was thinking of ways to win Emily back when he thought he heard the front door close and Emily call his name. He rolled over and told himself that he was just imagining things because he wanted her to be there so badly. He realized that he wasn't hearing things when he heard her running up the stairs, calling out his name repeatedly. He jumped out of bed and ran over to the bedroom door, throwing it open just in time to see Emily reach the top of the stairs. She ran over to him and threw herself into his arms.

"You....you came back!" Shane said unbelievably.

"Yeah I did, because as I tried to fall asleep I was thinking about what you'd said, and I realized that I do still love you. It's a pretty rough time in my life at the moment and I need you, my soulmate, now more than ever."

"And I'll be here for you through everything, from now on." Shane promised.

"I believe you. Shane, do you remember earlier when we were looking at our wedding picture? You asked me if I thought we could ever be that happy again. My revised answer is yes I do. I love you, Shane Filan."

"And I love you, Emily Filan." They both smiled.

"Can you do me a big favor, Shay?" She asked

"Of course, what?"

"Could you help me unpack my things first thing tomorrow morning?" She asked

"You really mean that? You're calling off the divorce?"

"Yes, I'm calling off the divorce."

"Then of course I'll help you unpack." He said. They then shared a very long, very sweet liss and knew that everything would be ok, and that in the end they'd always have each other no matter what.
