“2 café latte’s please,” Melanee said to the waiter, who had hovering over them, smiling, “and a blueberry muffin, thanks; no butter.” The waiter took their order then walked back inside the café. “I'm really nervous,” Shane blurted out, after a few minutes of silence. Mel laughed, “Shane, don’t worry,” she said, patting him on the arm, “you might not even like her?” Shane scoffed at this, “as if,” he said, then raised his hand to his mouth, “I just sounded like Alicia Silverstone from clueless!” They both laughed at this, when they saw their coffee’s arrive. “Thanks,” Melanee and Shane said together, as the waiter placed their coffee’s on the table. They sat there in silence for a while, as they sipped their latte’s. “Shane,” Melanee said, seriously, “what’s wrong with me?” Shane looked up at her strangely, “what?” he asked, putting down his latte, “what on earth do you mean?” “Well,” Melanee started, frowning slightly, “there must be something wrong with me…” “Why?” Shane asked, still very confused. “Because,” Melanee said, looking Shane in the eye, “you’ve never cracked on to me, ever!” “What?” Shane said, staring at Melanee, “what are you talking about, Mel?” “Okay,” Mel started, “a guy and a girl can’t possibly just be friends, for such a long time, without one of them having feelings for the other. Now you’ve never cracked on to me, and I wanna know why!” Shane just stared at Melanee in disbelief, “I can’t believe you just asked me that,” he said, shaking his head. “What?” Melanee said, taking a large gulp of her coffee, “I just wanna know what’s wrong with me… why don’t you wanna take me to bed?” “Mel!” Shane said, “I’ve been in a serious relationship for like 2 years, how was I meant to ‘bed’ you while I was with Fia?” “What about when you broke up with her,” Mel said, “you should have wanted to have sex with me, after you broke with her.” A couple of the other diners turned around to look at them, and a few older couples frowned and started talking quietly amongst themselves. Shane looked around him, then lowered his voice, “maybe, because I had too much respect for you,” he said, “maybe I don’t want to have sex with you, because it might ruin out friendship.” “Or maybe,” Mel said, looking rather angry, “it’s because you think I'm horrible, and you don’t think I'm attractive at all.” “Don’t be so stupid, Melanee,” Shane said, “what brought all this on, it’s absolutely ridiculous!” Melanee looked ready to cry, “I just wanna know why you don’t want to have sex with me,” she said, “what’s wrong with me?” “For Christ’s sake,” Shane said, with frustration, “I can’t believe you’re asking me this?” “I just need to know!” Melanee said loudly, making people turn again. “I just broke up with my girlfriend 2 days ago, Melanee,” Shane said. “Oh, as if that’s the reason,” Melanee scoffed, “you’re here to meet Gillian, who’s ‘the love of your life’ even though you haven’t met her yet.” Shane didn’t have a comeback for this, and just sat there, thinking. “Shane,” Melanee said, “you can tell me if I'm unattractive, I really won’t mind, I just wanna know!” “What?” Shane nearly shouted, “you’re bloody gorgeous!” “Then why don’t you want to sleep with me?” Melanee yelled, causing several older couples to move inside the café. “Melanee, shhh,” Shane said, slightly embarrassed, “your looks have nothing to do with it!” “Then what is it?” Melanee asked, with tears in her eyes, “what’s wrong with my personality, do I talk too much, do I smell, what?” Shane rolled his eyes, “you, Melanee,” he started, “are the sweetest, most gorgeous women I have ever met, but you are just my friend.” Melanee burst into tears, “why am I just your friend, we should be together, we are perfect for each other!” “Are you trying to tell me something?” Shane said, confused again, “are you asking me out?” “No!” Melanee said, “just if I'm the most gorgeous, sweetest girl you know, why haven’t you asked me out yet?” “Because we’re best friends,” Shane yelled, “would you say yes?” “What?” Melanee asked, looking up at Shane. “If I asked you out, would you say yes…” Shane repeated. “Probably not…” Melanee said. “So what are you going on about then,” Shane said, exasperated. “Fine!” Melanee said, gathering up her things, “don’t tell me what’s wrong with me, I don’t care… I'm going home… to fuck Nicky!” This made everyone turn around, and watch, all eager to see what was going on. “What?” Shane shouted, getting up out of his seat, “what the hell do you mean?” “I'll see if he finds me attractive!” Melanee yelled, walking over to her car. Shane just looked out as Melanee pulled out her Porche and drove away. “What the hell was that” he said to himself, sitting back down and putting his head in his hands. “Hello?” he heard a soft voice, ask above him. “What?” Shane said, looking up. “I was wondering if you were Shane?” the girl asked, smiling nervously. Shane saw Gillian standing above him, wearing a blue summer dress, and a white cardigan. “Wow…” he mumbled to himself. “What?” Gillian asked, confusedly. “Oh, nothing,” Shane said quickly, standing up and pulling out a chair, “please sit down.” Gill sat down and smiled, “so,” she said, “where’s Mel…” |
