All the lads ran over to where Shane and Melanee were now standing. Shane was rubbing his cheek and staring dumbly at the doorway where Fia had just ran out. Melanee was looking quite stunned and was also staring at the door. The lads didn’t know what to do; Bryan in particular was feeling awful, as he felt somewhat responsible for the whole incident. “But…she,” Shane mumbled, still staring to where Fia had left, “I, I don’t…” Mel too, was lost for words, “I, just don’t get it,” she said quietly, deep in thought, “we were just dancing…” All the lads looked over at Bryan and frowned at him, making him feel even guiltier. “Look, Shane,” Bryan said, putting a hand on his shoulder, “I wouldn’t worry, she probably just…got the wrong idea about you two, somehow.” “Somehow?” Nicky whispered, angrily, under his breath. Shane heard the comment and looked up at the lads, “what do you mean, get the wrong idea,” he said, accusingly, “what did you guys say.” “We said nothing,” Kian said, raising his arms in defence, “except Mcfadden, here,” he continued, feeling he had more loyalty to Shane than a man who he had only known a couple of months. “What?” Shane said, getting angry, “what did you say to her, Bryan?” “It was just a joke,” Bryan said, taking a step back, “I just said that she should watch you two.” “You said, what?” Shane said, taking a step toward Bryan, “why the hell would you say something like that?” “Shane,” Melanee said softly, placing her hand on Shane’s shoulder, “calm down, it wasn’t Bryan’s fault.” “Yes it was!” Shane said, taking another step toward him, “fee’s never cared about us, before, why would she start now?” “But Shane,” Melanee said, whispering calmly in his ear, “it won’t help the situation if you beat up your new band mate, for something he didn’t mean.” The guys didn’t hear what Melanee had said, but they saw that her words had calmed Shane down considerably. “You’re right,” he said, smiling slightly at Melanee, “there’s no need to be angry at you,” he said, turning to Bryan, “sorry, I know you didn’t mean anything by it, Bry.” “No need to be sorry,” Bryan said, letting out a deep breath, “I’m the one who is, so, so sorry.” The two friends embraced quickly. When Shane let go, he peered back at the door again, and his eyes got a little damp. He turned away, not wanting the other lads to see him cry. Melanee saw Shane and told the guys quietly that she was going to take Shane home and that she would call them later. Melanee turned back to Shane and wrapped her arms around him. He turned and put his head on her shoulder and cried out all his pain. “Shhh,” Melanee said soothingly, “it’ll be alright, Shane.” “I really loved her,” Shane said, his words muffled into Mel’s shirt. “You can still get her back, Shane,” Melanee said, rubbing his hair with her hands, “I’m sure she’ll forget about it.” “No, she won’t,” Shane said, as fresh tears welled in his eyes, “she was so serious, she looked really angry. You heard her, she said that she couldn’t be with me while you’re around.” Melanee thought about this for a moment, “Shane,” she said, pulling up his head to face her, “if you want me too, I can go, I’ll walk away. If you love her so much, I’ll do that for you.” Shane looked up at Mel and smiled warmly, “no-one’s worth that, Mel, nothing’s worth giving you up for,” he said, hugging her tightly, “not even Fia.” Mel smiled, “then get over her, Shane,” she said, punching him lightly on the arm, “cos I don’t want you moping around all summer, now come on, I’m taking you home for a night in!” Shane smiled, and took Mel’s arm as they walked out of the club. Nicky saw them leave and sighed, wondering if they were in fact more than friends. |
