This I Promise You
Chapter 21
Reconciling
Nicky dropped me off, and waited until I got inside. Yep, you guessed it. I ended up believing in the unbelievable. I had to go home anyway, sooner or later.
I placed the keys and my mobile phone on the coffee table and made my way to the stairs. I stopped when I saw Mark sitting by the window, looking at me instead of the world outside. He was still a mess, and he looked worse than when I left him earlier. Well, at least he got out of the clothes he had been wearing previously.
The sunshine gently enveloped him in a warm embrace, and you could clearly see his misery because of the gentle light. His eyes were bloodshot, his nose and ears were of a reddish color. His cheeks were red as usual, along with his full lips. All in all, he looked like a tomato. A sad, unhappy tomato.
I walked over and sat beside him. Mark smiled feebly, and I knew I had to be the one to talk first. Otherwise, we’d be staring at each other all day.
‘You sent Nicky didn’t you?’ I asked casually, as if nothing happened. He nodded sheepishly. ‘You could’ve gone yourself you know. It would be better to hear it from you.’ I said softly. Mark sighed. ‘Well, I had the feeling you didn’t want to see me just yet, so I had sent Nicky instead. I knew you wouldn’t listen to me. That’s why I didn’t say much last night too. And I’m sorry I didn’t go after you when you left. I knew you had to get it all out first.’ He explained. True, I felt quite hurt that he didn’t as much as try to follow me. I was practically dying for him to do so. ‘I see.’ I said simply.
Mark twiddled his thumbs for a while, and there was an uncomfortable silence surrounding us. ‘Look, Toni, I’m really sorry. I don’t know how to explain everything clearly to you, but I truly am sorry. And I promise anything like that will never, ever, ever happen again.’ He said. Mark was about to say something more but I silenced him by putting my finger on his lips. ‘You don’t have to explain anything anymore. I heard everything from Nicky already. And the mere fact that you promised that it won’t happen again is enough for me already.’ I said, as Mark grinned and wrapped his arms around me. I didn’t know how long his promise would last, but I’m glad that he did give me a reassurance. And I knew Mark. He was one to seldom break promises, and I had a feeling that this was a promise that would last for a very long time.
