One of the advantages of summer school is that by taking classes a student is able to ease the regular school year class schedule. But the main disadvantage is the time commitment and having to schedule vacations around summer school. The alternative I have used with my children is to have them take courses through BYU High School Independent Study. Additional information is provided at their Read Me First: Helpful Information web site.
The courses two courses my children have taken are:
- SOCSC 12 American Government Part 1 (for American Government)
- SOCSC 17 Junior Achievement-Applied Economics (for Economics)
Some of the courses, such as SOCSC 12 American Government Part 1, may now be taken on the web.
Prior to taking the course, one should have a letter from the principal approving the courses for high school credit towards graduation. It is best to share the pamphlet of courses with the principal and inform him/her of this option. The classes are completed via mail and/or internet, but the high school is responsible for providing a proctor for the final exam and the principal should be aware of this. The final exam is mailed to the high school, the student takes the exam at the high school in the presence of the proctor, then the high school mails it back to BYU for grading. Everything must be completed about three weeks prior to graduation in order to graduate on time. Please contact me if you wish to receive a copy of the high school letter written by my children's principal.
Since the BYU Economics course uses the same text and study guide as the high school, we were able to check out the text and study guide from the high school. We returned the text when the course was completed. The study guide is consumable, but they would have to provide it to the student anyway, so it was provided at no cost to the student.
To obtain a current brochure, send an e-mail to BYU Independent Study with your name and address.
