Living in History |
Everyone is living in history, right now someone, somewhere is being born,or living and making a small contribrtion to history. |
It may be you, who knows, but we all make history, you, yourself may not be the big name in history it may a son, daughter or maybe one of your grandchilden who knows? Or in the past one of your ancestors may have done something small or big who knows? But history is part of us all, we can't do anything about the past. But we can do something about the furture,we should be ready to change history and not make the same mistakes. Who knows nobody knows. Only History will tell! |

Preston about 27 miles south of Lancaster (and my home town) is now the admin centre of Lancashire many Preston people return every 20 years to celebrate the world famous Preston Guild The Preston Guild dates back well over 900 years Guilds have certainly been held in Preston since the 1180's but the first recorded Guild is one in 1397 the medieval town of Preston was granted it's first charter by King Henry II the charter gave the tradesmen real power to make decisons locally in the King's name. With power of the Guild the burgesses controlled the life of the town and regulated trade within it's boudaries. No butcher, baker or candlestick maker could set up in Preston unless his name appeared on the Guild Roll. So important was this power that the Guild Merchants would meet to reaffirm and renew it traditionally on the first Monday after the feast of the beheading of St.John the Baptist on August 29th. By 1542 in belated accordance with a 14th century ruling the 20 year cycle began. New trades sprung up to service the new needs gunsmiths, locksmiths. spurriers, vintners and musicians 75 trades under the control of the Guild by 1642. The Guild remained a powerfull force in Society and by 1742 reading the Guild Rolls read like a catalogue of the Rich and High born in Lancashire with names like the Arkwrights, Cliftons, Hodgkinsons.Whallys and Rivingtons |
King Cotton Lancashire is probably best know for it's cotton industry, towns like Blackburn,Bolton,Bury, Rochdale and many more towns prospered from "King Cotton", way back in the 1800's the cotton indusrty was one of Britians leading industrys and major export earners employing 1000's of people in the south of the county but today saddly, it is greatly reduced.Preston was it's self a big cotton town with more than 90 factorys which employed 1000's of people. The sky line of Preston and all the other cotton towns were full of great chimmys each marking the site of a cotton mill run by steam. Now Preston hasn't one. The up side is we have clean air but the down side is unemployment. |
