Low Hauxley and Hadston

"Tut, tut" said the priest as I loaded my fishing tackle in the car " You know where people who fish on a Sunday go don't you" he asked. "Yes most of them head to Hauxley" I answered.

Low Hauxley is one of Northumbria's most popular low tide fishing places, you can always tell when there is a angling competion going on if you pass because of the large number of cars parked. The village is a no parking area so park at the telephone box at the junction or the carpark a little further along towards Amble. Alternatively follow the A1068 and take the turnoff for Hadston beach (see below), turn left at the end of the road and continue as far as you can. The best parts are Silver Carrs and Bondi Carrs. Bondi Carrs is split in to Big and little Bondi with Big Bondi exposed first, get on as soon as possible and head half way along to the break in Little Bondi, during a rough sea fish shelter in this gulley and can be found here. When the water begins to drop or the fish haven't turned up move to the end. Little Bondi is not always accessible and is best avoided if you don't know the area well. Silver Carrs is only accessible during the spring tides but offers the better fishing. Both Carrs are difficult underfoot and for safty sake best fished with a fellow angler. I have been told that the beach infront of Silver Carrs can fish at high tide (in front of the wall) as soon as its safe to get on the sand but I have not had much luck there personally (it may be better at night). Hauxley is also a popular place for bait digging. Hadston Carrs divides Hadston beach from Newburgh beach and is accessible during the spring tides. Newburgh can fish throughout the tide but is often better on the ebb during a neap tide (smaller the better) At hight tide if the sea is calm it is often possible to wade quite far out. Fish Newburgh from half way down then head onto the Carr. Fish the front left side casting slightly left over the thick weed beds, getting fish back through this is difficult and tackle with a plenty of muscle is needed. Hadston beach fishes better on the flood. Again a small tide is best. Both beaches have extensive weed beds below the spring low tide mark. When fishing Hadston and Newburgh beaches distance is the key.
