Newbiggin provides some of the best marks in the North east and the locals are more than willing to pinpoint them for you. There is a place to fish regardless of state of tide or weather conditions.
Church Point is an excellent lowtide mark. Park in the large free carpark next to the church/caravan site at the northen end of the town beside the cresswell arms pub. Walk around the seaward side of the church and caravans keeping to the cliff edge (This is easier than going down the stairs then heading over the rocks as I did the first time). This is a well known mark so expect plenty of company on match days. The rock point directly infront of the stairs opposite the church is worth a shot if church point is too crowded and fishes best on the flood. The flatrock between this point and the breakwater is not very good. East pipe is next to the breakwater and is only accessable during the spring tides casting to the right. Long casts are not needed off any of these rock marks and the bottom is heavy on the tackle box. As this area is very exposed there is little weed growth on the rocks so foothold is not a problem.
The breakwater offers a 24 hour fishing platform for those anglers who don't mind breaking a leg and is popular with youngsters that have not yet developed a healthy fear of death. The beach between the breakwater and the promanade is a good choice at high tide, especially at night for whiting during the winter months. The bottom is a mixture of sand and small boulders (25lb line will provide enough strength to break free whilst not hidering casting distance too much). In my experience fishing is best close to the promanade but the beach is very small so it does not matter a great deal. The promanade is a high tide mark which fishes best at night. Park in the main street in one of the parking bays and follow the sign on foot, or in the car park at the north end. Again this is a popular place with the locals who tend to head to the south part. The promanade is made up of several platforms which are exposed as the tide falls, these can have a slimey feel underfoot so boots with good grip are best. The high wall directly behind you provides good shelter. One of the best things about the promanade is it's close proximity to the high street if you fancy a pizza or bag of chips. During the day it is also possible to restock your bait supplies at the local tackle shop nearby
The River Wansbeck is included here as it is nearby (and not enough can be said to give it it's own page). Access is easy via Cambois and is fishable 24 hours a day. Main sport is flounder but small school bass can show up during the summer at high tide.
