Cod, whiting, flatties and eels are the usual sport and although the odd rod bender gets landed most are under 3lb with a lot of undersize fish almost all year round that never seem to reciprocate being thrown back by returning to me when big and fat.
North Shields fishquay/icehouse area
Rough ground but a good depth of water. Parking is available but can be difficult to get a space during the day. Large pieces of debris floating in the river can be a problem so keep an eye out or your rod will get pulled in, a long cast with the line held high will avoid much of it. Large number of bait stealing crabs can spoil the day. Occassional seal to keep you amused because the fishing probably won't .
Royal Quays
Follow the signs for the ferry terminal and marina then head for the waste ground that runs along the river. Enter through the gate and head East as far as you can to the mouth of the marina. This is the best spot and is usually crowded although fish can be caught along the full length. Most fish caught on the flood during the tidal run. Slack water can be quiet. Deep water and a fairly clean bottom but strong currents can cause cross overs even with grip leads. Best fishing is during the day in winter where large bags of decent whiting can be caught. The fishing tends to go off when night falls. Mid week gives you a better chance of a spot. Possible to fish from your car making it a good bad weather mark. N.B There are very small hardly noticable no fishing signs up at Royal Quays but nobody seems to take any notice of them. I have not heard any reports of anyone enforcing them either, the gate is sometime locked but can easily be climbed over. This is waste land so I can not see what the problem is, probably just someone covering their backs incase some idiot falls in and drowns. DO NOT BLAME ME IF YOU GET NICKED.(UPDATE: I'VE RECENTLY BEEN TOLD A NEW FENCE HAS BEEN ERECTED AND ANGLERS CHASED OFF THE SITE, I DON'T THINK THEY'RE PROSECUTING YET BUT IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME. I HAVEN'T BEEN TO ROYAL QUAYS FOR A FEW MONTHS SO TAKE CARE. TONY'S FISHING HOLE DOES NOT ENCOURAGE OR CONDONE TRESPASSING OR WE WOULD ALSO LIST TYNEMOUTH PIER WHICH IS CLOSED TO ANGLERS (EXCEPT CLUBS) AND SUGGEST NIGHT FISHING WITH MINIMUM LIGHT USE.
Walker/St. Peters/Byker area
Flounder country. Not the kind of place you fish alone at night. Usually enough company during the day to keep the muggers at bay but when the sun starts to set pack up and run. Any snags may be due to concrete boots and Mr Big don't like you to tug to hard. Most fish fall to the long casters. For more information on fishing the Tyne try the link below.
