Remotely situated Polgown House lies in the valley to the right of the picture above and is nine miles up a single-track road which winds gradually uphill, twisting and turning alongside Scaur Water. There are no visible neighbours. The next dwelling is one and a half miles away and a little further along the Glen is the forest with its network of tracks and trails which stretch for miles. Penpont village and the larger Thornhill are about fourteen miles away. The motorway is about 35 miles should you wish to visit other areas including Edinburgh about 70 miles to the north.
Polgown house and its adjacent byre  with resident barn owl were built around 1890 and provides accommodation for seven with one double bed and a second room with up to four single beds and a babies cot. Occasional extra guests can take advantage of the sofa bed in the large lounge which has an open fire and uninterrupted views down the valley. Alongside the house a lively stream rushes down the house to meet up with Scaur Water. Dogs are welcome by arrangement provided they are kept under strict control on the surrounding farmland but are free to exercise in the enclosed garden. Kennelling available. Strictly no smoking.

HOW TO BOOK
If you are unfamiliar with Scotland then it might help to know that Dumfriesshire is part of the southern uplands close to the English border and just across the Solway Firth from Cumbria. It is an area often missed by tourists rushing north towards the attractions of Edinburgh, the Highlands or the west coast but is characterised by rolling hills, quiet roads and remote valleys unchanged for decades. The coast is within easy reach, with many activities such as golf, fishing, canoeing, and water sports and huge tracts of sparsely populated scenic countryside waiting to be explored.
