Hybrid cars have been around for a long time.  The first hybrid car was patentiented in 1905.  They really didn't become popular until the 1990's when toyota unleashed the prius.  The chemistry of the car is in the batttery and the gas engine.  The battery is made up of Potassium Hydroxide.  When this reacts to the batteries iron and nickel shell it forms a high output of energy.  This is alos very reliable and rechargable.  This combining with the gas powered engines octane.  The octane is what builds up the pressure to pump the engine.  This pressure causes the spark plugs to bounce up and down and to get everything turning.  Those two combine to make the vehicle run.
